SACRAMENTO, Calif.<\/span> \u2014<\/span> When Utah State Men\u2019s Basketball players get hurt, Leah Dunagan is <\/span>there to help. She\u2019s the team\u2019s athletic trainer and manages everything from in<\/span>–<\/span>game injuries to <\/span>pre and post<\/span>–<\/span>game treatments for the athletes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>She has come to the rescue with head injuries and bloody lacerations on the court. Dunagan is <\/span>the calming presence when things have gone terribly wrong.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn order for the athlete to stay calm, you have to stay calm because if I panic, then they’re going <\/span>to panic and so keeping calm keeps them calm,\u201d Dunagan said. \u201cYou’re kind of taught how to <\/span>manage emergency crisis in school… granted, you don’t really know how you’re going to react <\/span>until it happens, but adrenaline kind of kicks.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

On top of that, she\u2019s e<\/span>xcelling in a male<\/span>–<\/span>dominated industry. Dunagan is one of four athletic <\/span>trainers that work on a men\u2019s basketball team that made the NCAA Tournament, per an email she <\/span>received. She called that fact \u201cpretty crazy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s crazy cause I never thought that I wou<\/span>ld have worked with a men’s basketball team,\u201d <\/span>Dunagan said. \u201cIt was never an aspiration of mine, but now that I have done this it’s<\/span> \u2014<\/span> I don’t <\/span>think that I would want to work another sport.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span>
<\/span><\/p>\n

But even though she supports a male team with a primarily male co<\/span>aching and support staff, she <\/span>\u201cholds her ground,\u201d guard Sean Bairstow said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone respects her and likes her a lot, and she fits in really well,\u201d Bairstow said. \u201cReally, really loved, and everyone\u2019s happy to have her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Working in a male-dominated industry is something Dunagan knew she would have<\/span> to do as an athletic trainer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>You know, you just got to stand your ground,\u201d Dunagan said. \u201cThere’s really no intimidation <\/span>factor really at all. The profession and athletic training is also pretty male dominant, and so it <\/span>kind of comes with the territo<\/span>ry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally, Dunagan came to Utah State to support the gymnastics team. After working with <\/span>them for three years and then the softball team for two years she was promoted to men\u2019s <\/span>basketball. <\/span><\/p>\n

Now she\u2019s well known for the fact that she assists a<\/span> seven<\/span>–<\/span>footer in center Trevin Dorius.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody gets obviously a laugh out of it,\u201d Dunagan said. \u201cI’ll either tell him to take a seat or I’ll stand on something or whatnot, but we all make jokes about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dunagan also has to be prepared for anything a<\/span>nd everything, such as when Bairstow <\/span>suffered a finger injury that took him out of the game during the 2021<\/span>–<\/span>22 season. Dunagan <\/span>helped him recover from that as well as a wrist injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like the main thing is just like the effort that s<\/span>he puts forward,\u201d Bairstow said. \u201cShe’s there <\/span>so many hours of the day and has so many different availabilities… and the care factor that she has for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rehabbing an athlete isn\u2019t always easy. Dunagan said sometimes it takes a bit for the player to <\/span>buy into the rehab process but they usually change their tune when they see results.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>\u201cBut once that buy<\/span>–<\/span>in is in and they see the process work then they’re us<\/span>ually completely bought <\/span><\/span>in,\u201d Dunagan said.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, win or loss, Dunagan knows she\u2019s helped her student<\/span>–<\/span>athletes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is incredibly rewarding,\u201d Dunagan said. \u201cIt’s nice to see an athlete go from<\/span> \u2014<\/span> obviously it\u2018s <\/span>not nice to see the athlete<\/span> they get injured<\/span> \u2014<\/span> but when they are injured and watching them go <\/span>through the whole recovery process and rehab process and getting backed to on the court, it\u2019s incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that it has been \u201can honor to be able to work\u201d with this year\u2019s Aggie<\/span> basketball team.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNever doubted any of their hard work whatsoever,\u201d Dunagan said. \u201cThey have never swayed in any kind of way. Their attitude has always been to keep pushing. They never looked back, so they knew that they were a tournament team and so did<\/span> all of the support staff, the coaching <\/span>staff, everybody. And to see all the hard work that they put forth to see it payoff has been incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

And for other women that aspire to become athletic trainers, Dunagan says \u201cto follow your dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt is a<\/span>n incredibly rewarding profession,\u201d Dunagan said. \u201cStick to your guns. It’s a lot of fun.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
