Although the video is currently gaining traction, it\u2019s actually from two years ago. Still, I promise it\u2019s relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley Roberts interviewed Dwayne Johnson, otherwise known as the Rock, and <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/the-11-best-emily-blunt-movies\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emily Blunt<\/a> for the Heart YouTube channel, when the topic of Instagram followers came up. Roberts points out that the Rock had 255 million IG followers, to which he responds, \u201cI\u2019m the most followed American.\u201d As it turns out, this is no longer true.<\/p>\n<p>Though the Rock now has 397 million followers on Instagram, <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/celebrities\/what-did-selena-gomez-wear-to-the-2024-sag-awards\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Selena Gomez<\/a> has surpassed him, with 429 million followers. For those keeping track, I have nine IG followers  \u2014 not nine million, just straight up nine.<\/p>\n<p>So, who was \u2014 and still is \u2014 the most followed person on IG? Well, soccer superstar Lionel Messi has more than the Rock, boasting 500 million followers. But the answer is another soccer superstar: Cristiano Ronaldo has 623 million followers on Instagram. However, the Rock aimed a playful jab at Ronaldo \u2014 one that seemed to have a twist of truth to it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Emily Blunt ghosted The Rock before accepting Jungle Cruise role\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VtSKrkHNMw0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Rock said about Ronaldo, \u201cHe\u2019s been paying for his followers for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Immediately thereafter, the Rock insisted he was kidding \u2014 but the humorous thing is, this pay-for-followers situation has been suspected of Ronaldo for a while, based on the footballer\u2019s obsession with being popular, and the fact that \u201cfake followers\u201d can be checked by multiple different services. One such service claims that as many as <a href=\"https:\/\/theforkball.com\/the-truth-about-cristiano-ronaldos-instagram-followers\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">150 million of Ronaldo\u2019s followers are not real<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, this doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that Ronaldo buys his followers \u2014 though he certainly easily can, and might be, because many fake profiles follow popular accounts. It\u2019s also true that many popular accounts buy followers, partly because the more popular an account is, the more opportunities it will have for sponsorships. Thus, buying followers is more common than most might think, and many different social media boosting services offer the option.<\/p>\n<p>So, even though the Rock is kidding, he is likely accurate.
