In an announcement, the Parliament stated the AI regulation was endorsed by the majority of its members with 523 votes in favour, 46 against and 49 abstentions.<\/p>\n
Brando Benifei, co-rapporteur of the internal market committee at the European Parliament, described Europe\u2019s AI legislation as \u201cthe world\u2019s first binding law\u201d on the technology, pointing to objectives of the legislation around combatting discrimination and encouraging transparency and opportunities around usage. <\/p>\n
Benifei further credited the Parliament for the impending ban of \u201cunacceptable AI practices\u201d, a move expected to protect worker and citizen rights.<\/p>\n
The law is now subject to a \u201cfinal lawyer-linguist check\u201d and the Parliament noted it still needs to be \u201cformally endorsed\u201d by the EC. Countries in the bloc are expected to give formal approval in May.<\/p>\n
With the legislation set to enter into force early next year, European Commissioner for internal markets Thierry Breton claimed Europe \u201cis now a global standard-setter in AI\u201d.<\/p>\n
The AI Act includes provisions that will lead to the banning of biometrics \u201cbased on sensitive characteristics\u201d, emotional and behavioural recognition and predictive policing. However, the use of biometrics to investigate \u201ccriminal offences\u201d will be exempt.<\/p>\n
