The Indian market has long been seen as the industry's last
\ngreat growth opportunity. Although it has been a rocky road, with
\nmany original equipment manufacturers \u2014 such as Ford and GM
\n\u2014 suffering blowouts in the pursuit of the opportunity. That
\nvolume potential now looks set to be realized.<\/p>\n

Between 2020 and 2025 it is set to grow at a pace only bettered
\nby the much smaller Indonesian market among those selling over 1
\nmillion light vehicles a year and on its way from the 4.5
\nmillion-plus level now to an 8 million-plus market by the
\nmid-2030s. That is the first part of the good-news story.<\/p>\n

The second part is that as India gets richer, so too does the
\nmarket mix \u2014 no surprises there. But it is quite a shift from
\nthe market being viewed as a bastion of stripped-out A- and
\nB-segment buzz boxes.<\/p>\n

Therefore, features long held as being reserved just for the
\npremium segment are flowing into other areas of the market. OEMs
\nare offering advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) features
\nsuch as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, forward
\ncollision avoidance and driver monitoring systems.<\/p>\n

Effectively, India is beginning to look a lot like other markets
\nin the world and is bringing a significant uptick in ADAS adoption
\n\u2014 a win-win for vehicle planners and consumers alike.<\/p>\n

However, amid this promise, challenges loom. Regulatory delays
\nemerge as a significant hurdle. Customizing ADAS solutions for the
\nunique characteristics of Indian roads is also imperative to ensure
\ntheir effectiveness and widespread adoption. Meanwhile, those roads
\nare rapidly developing. Highway construction is now moving at a
\nfivefold pace versus ten years ago, further supporting the rollout
\nof ADAS features such as highway assist.<\/p>\n

New regulation on the horizon<\/strong><\/p>\n

The landscape is poised for a transformative shift with the
\nMinistry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) proposing a draft
\nthat could make ADAS safety features, including blind spot
\nmonitoring, standard across various segments of both four-wheelers
\nand commercial vehicles.<\/p>\n

While ADAS has become commonplace in premium vehicles, this
\nmarks a crucial step toward large-scale adoption, particularly in
\nmass-market models and commercial vehicles. The proposal includes
\nthe specification of collision warning systems under the industry
\nstandard, with a particular emphasis on installing a “Moving Off
\nInformation System,” or MOIS, to alert drivers to the proximity of
\npedestrians or cyclists, thus averting potential collisions.
\nHowever, the trajectory of how this proposal will evolve into law
\nor regulation remains unclear.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Bharat New Car Assessment Program is evolving beyond
\nits initial scope by incorporating ADAS in its criteria. This
\npositions ADAS as an integral aspect of vehicular safety standards,
\nreflecting the industry's acknowledgment of the pivotal role these
\ntechnologies play in reducing accidents and their severity.<\/p>\n

Consumer preferences and cost of ADAS
\nfeatures<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to S&amp;P Global Mobility, the average ADAS content
\nin the Indian market will double during the 2025-30 period. This is
\nunderpinned by the unique advantages presented by electric
\nvehicle-specific platforms. These provide a “clean sheet” and
\ncreate an optimal environment for the integration of advanced
\ntechnologies. The advent of new electrical\/electronic, or E\/E,
\narchitectures further supports the incorporation of more automated
\nfeatures, creating a harmonious blend of cutting-edge technology
\nand sustainable mobility.<\/p>\n

OEMs including Kia, MG, Honda, Hyundai, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra,
\nTata, BYD and Toyota are at the forefront of integrating Level 2
\nautonomy and advanced ADAS features in their vehicles. This
\nstrategic move not only reflects an alignment with the global trend
\nof prioritizing automotive safety but also demonstrates a concerted
\neffort to make such technologies more accessible to a wider range
\nof Indian consumers.<\/p>\n

Suppliers and OEMs envision a reduction in vehicle costs as
\nproduction volumes scale up. The two factors that will contribute
\nto this growth are regulation and the heightened awareness and
\ndemand from consumers. S&amp;P Global Mobility expects that by
\n2035, one in four passenger vehicles sold in India will be equipped
\nwith ADAS features.<\/p>\n
