The automotive industry has been searching for a cheaper, more
\nsustainable alternative to lithium-ion batteries. While
\nexperimenting with several cathode chemistries, including
\niron-based lithium-ion batteries in low-end models and variants,
\nthe industry has also been working on sodium-ion batteries.<\/p>\n

Although iron-based lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries such as
\nlithium iron phosphate (LFP) and lithium manganese iron phosphate
\n(LMFP) are cheaper, they are unable to fully resolve all supply
\nchain issues, which is where sodium-ion batteries come in. Sodium
\nis nearly 400 times more abundant than lithium, making its
\nprocurement much easier.<\/p>\n

Last year was a particularly moving year for sodium-ion battery
\ntechnology in the automotive segment, with several big-ticket
\nannouncements, which have continued into 2024. Some of the
\ncompanies that made a move toward sodium-ion batteries include
\nmainland Chinese automakers BYD, Anhui Jianghuai Automobile, and
\nJiangxi Jiangling Group New Energy Vehicle.<\/p>\n

In April 2023, Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) announced
\nthat Chery Automobile became the first customer for its sodium-ion
\nbatteries. CATL unveiled its internally developed sodium-ion
\nbatteries in July 2021. While CATL's first-generation sodium-ion
\nbattery had an energy density of 160 watt-hours per kilogram
\n(Wh\/kg), the battery maker's next-generation sodium-ion battery
\nenergy density will exceed 200 Wh\/kg.<\/p>\n

However, we are now witnessing non-mainland Chinese players
\nentering the fray. Stellantis and Northvolt recently announced
\ntheir move toward sodium-ion battery technology.<\/p>\n

The technology today<\/strong><\/p>\n

Until recently, sodium-ion batteries were thought to be suited
\nonly for energy storage systems or the two-wheeler segment, where
\nperformance requirements are not too high. Although these segments
\nwill be where sodium-ion batteries are primarily used, recent
\ndevelopments suggest that sodium-ion batteries can cater to a niche
\nsegment within the light-vehicle segment, especially intracity
\nmicro cars.<\/p>\n

Sodium-ion batteries will probably be an alternative to LFP
\nbatteries, given their closely matched energy density figures.
\nSodium-ion batteries offer energy density of approximately 160
\nWh\/kg, compared with about 200 Wh\/kg offered by LFP batteries. This
\nlow energy density, combined with a lower life cycle, is a big
\ndisadvantage that could keep sodium-ion batteries confined to
\nlow-cost, entry-level cars.<\/p>\n

However, there are several factors that could prove to be
\ncatalysts for higher adoption of sodium-ion cells in the
\nlight-vehicle segment. In terms of technology, sodium-ion batteries
\nare much safer, less reactive than lithium and able to operate more
\nefficiently over a wider temperature range, offering comparatively
\ngood performance at lower temperatures.<\/p>\n

Sodium-ion cells are much cheaper to manufacture than Li-ion
\nbatteries. According to S&amp;P Global Mobility research, the cost
\nof manufacturing sodium-ion cells is about $50\/kWh, compared with
\n$70\/kWh for Li-ion batteries. The cell manufacturing process for
\nsodium-ion cells is also almost identical to that of Li-ion cells.
\nThis means heavy investments would not be required if any supplier
\ndecides to switch from Li-ion cells to sodium-ion.<\/p>\n

Outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is highly likely that the use of sodium-ion batteries in the
\nlight-vehicle segment will be limited in the short to medium term.
\nAccording to an S&amp;P Global Mobility forecast, the share of
\nsodium-ion batteries in the light-vehicle segment could reach about
\n3% in 2030 globally. In mainland China, sodium-ion batteries will
\nhave about a 5.5% share in the light-vehicle segment, whereas in
\nEurope, the battery type could have a share of about 2%. However,
\nif the prices of Li-ion batteries remain at higher levels, the
\nglobal share of sodium-ion batteries, in the best-case scenario,
\ncould increase to about 5% by 2030.<\/p>\n

Sodium-ion batteries are already seen as more cost-effective,
\nsafer, less susceptible to supply chain disruptions, and more
\nenvironmentally friendly to produce. With suppliers claiming that
\ntheir next-generation sodium-ion batteries will have the same
\nenergy density as LFP at 200 Wh\/kg, sodium-ion batteries will start
\nmaking a lot more sense for use in cars, even in the mid-level car
\nsegment. The possibility of reducing dependency on mainland China
\nfor processed raw materials will certainly work as an added
\nincentive for the industry to consider sodium-ion.<\/p>\n
