Grilles started getting bigger and bolder, and the manufacturer appeared to be breaking with tradition, interrupting its design evolution that yielded few surprises in the last three or four decades. It seemed that everybody except BMW\u2019s defensive designers was against this trend of growing grilles to gargantuan proportions. This even sparked a series of very popular memes that saw the already huge BMW grilles getting even bigger and enveloping cars\u2019 entire front ends.<\/p>\n<p>Probably the peak exponent of this flamboyant opulence phase in BMW\u2019s design is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2023\/06\/19\/2023-bmw-xm-review\/\">XM super SUV<\/a>, which the manufacturer envisioned as a Lamborghini Urus rival. Proof of that is the brand\u2019s latest concepts, the Vision Neue Klasse and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2024\/03\/21\/bmw-vision-neue-klasse-x-revealed\/\">Vision Neue Klasse X<\/a> design studies, whose main design cues are nods to BMWs from decades past.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BMW Vision Neue Klasse X (2025) - Explained by Designer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tIu3HK8oWL8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The first of these concepts to be unveiled was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2023\/09\/04\/styling-impressions-of-the-bmw-vision-neue-klasse\/\">Vision Neue Klasse sedan<\/a>, which previews BMW\u2019s first dedicated electric sedan. When it was revealed, it came with the tagline \u201cBMW reinvents itself,\u201d and that\u2019s definitely not an understatement. The daytime running light signature is simple, made up of two slanted LED lines\u2014this is an element we expect to see in all Neue Klasse electric models, as well as the combustion models they inspire.<\/p>\n<p>BMW has also integrated the kidney grilles with the front light clusters. The grilles won\u2019t be open and won\u2019t serve the functional purpose of allowing air through in the future model (since it\u2019s an EV), but they are an integral part of BMW\u2019s visual identity. Viewed from any angle, the Neue Klasse sedan looks low and planted, with a great stance. It has a lot of the sedan\u2019s design DNA, but it has wider and bolder flanks, a more aggressive-looking front end, and a completely different kidney grille design. Unlike the sedan, whose grille is integrated into the same design element as each of its front light clusters, in the crossover, the grille is vertical and much more prominent. It too will be completely closed off and will only serve the purpose of retaining the brand\u2019s identity and making it very visible.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the Vision Neue Klasse X\u2019s faux grille isn\u2019t especially big, it is tall and slightly angled forward, giving the vehicle a very strong \u201cshark nose\u201d appearance. This harkens back to BMWs of old, including the original Neue Klasse of the 1960s, and it\u2019s a very successful reinterpretation of such an iconic design element\u2014it\u2019s not overdone, but it\u2019s also not subdued either.<\/p>\n<h2>A Futuristic Interior<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bmw-vision-neue-klasse-x-35.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-471742\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bmw-vision-neue-klasse-x-35-830x553.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"830\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bmw-vision-neue-klasse-x-35-830x553.jpg 830w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bmw-vision-neue-klasse-x-35-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bmw-vision-neue-klasse-x-35-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bmw-vision-neue-klasse-x-35-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bmw-vision-neue-klasse-x-35.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the interiors, BMW seems to be going for a distinctly retro vibe, at least when it comes to some of the design elements and the materials used (especially the fabric material showcased on the Neue Klasse X concept). The cabin of Neue Klasse models will be quite futuristic, though, with an almost complete absence of physical buttons.<\/p>\n<p>It will still retain some of the sporty feel of old BMW interiors, whose center console was angled towards the driver. However, BMW has decided to reinterpret that design element by making a screen that\u2019s skewed in the driver\u2019s direction, so one corner of the screen is closed to the driver without actually angling it away from the passenger\u2014it\u2019s a clever design trick that seems to work quite well, at least visually.<\/p>\n<h2>Some Neue Klasse Design Cues Will Come To ICE Models<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2025-bmw-ix3-neue-klasse-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-465135\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2025-bmw-ix3-neue-klasse-02-830x554.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"830\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2025-bmw-ix3-neue-klasse-02-830x553.jpg 830w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2025-bmw-ix3-neue-klasse-02-1534x1024.jpg 1534w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2025-bmw-ix3-neue-klasse-02-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2025-bmw-ix3-neue-klasse-02-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2025-bmw-ix3-neue-klasse-02-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/2025-bmw-ix3-neue-klasse-02.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that while BMW is making a big deal out of launching its Neue Klasse line of models, it will still keep a parallel line of combustion models on sale well into the next decade. These models will either be based on one of the manufacturer\u2019s front-wheel drive platforms or the CLAR rear-wheel drive architecture, but they will be styled to look a lot like their Neue Klasse EV counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>What this means is that BMW purists who prefer combustion engines will be catered for, and the ICE models they will be able to choose between should be very handsome. We\u2019ll have to wait and see how all this plays out exactly, but we say the two Neue Klasse concepts announce a new and very positive chapter of BMW design.<\/p>\n<p>So what do you think?
