While progress from a year-ago<br \/>\nreading of 15 million units, it would reflect a step down from the<br \/>\n15.7 million unit reading of the fourth quarter of 2023, reflective<br \/>\nof the volatile nature of the current auto demand environment.<\/p>\n<p >&#8220;With inventory growing, incentives rising, and quarter-end<br \/>\nsales targets to be met, March sales volume will be relatively<br \/>\npositive, rising to over 1.4 million units for just the second time<br \/>\nin the past 34 months,&#8221; said Chris Hopson, principal analyst at<br \/>\nS&amp;amp;P Global Mobility. &#8220;However, since the second quarter of<br \/>\n2023, the pace of sales has been in a prolonged holding period,<br \/>\ngiven the current purchase environment facing auto consumers.<br \/>\nHigh-interest rates, slowly receding vehicle prices, and uncertain<br \/>\neconomic conditions continue to push against any consistent upshift<br \/>\nfor demand levels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p >Regarding inventory trends, Matt Trommer, associate director of<br \/>\nMarket Reporting at S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility said, &#8220;At the beginning<br \/>\nof March, available dealer advertised inventories were up to 2.62<br \/>\nmillion units, an increase of 56% over last year and up 5% compared<br \/>\nto the beginning of February 2023. Model-year (MY) 2024 vehicles<br \/>\nrepresented 84% of that inventory, so pockets of MY2023 vehicles<br \/>\nremain, setting up the potential for additional spring clearance<br \/>\nactivity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p >The S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility US auto outlook for 2024 reflects<br \/>\nsustained, but more moderate growth levels for light vehicle sales.<br \/>\nProduction levels are expected to continue to develop, especially<br \/>\nearly in the year as some automakers look to continue to restock in<br \/>\nthe wake of production shutdowns late in 2023 and decent December<br \/>\n2023 sales volume.<\/p>\n<p >&#8220;Advancing production levels set the stage for incentives and<br \/>\ninventory to continue to develop, potentially enticing new vehicle<br \/>\nbuyers who remain on the sidelines due to higher interest rates,<br \/>\nbut it will be a bumpy ride and month-to-month sales volatility is<br \/>\nlikely,&#8221; said Hopson. &#8220;S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility projects<br \/>\ncalendar-year 2024 light vehicle sales volume of 15.96 million<br \/>\nunits, a 3% increase from the 2023 tally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ihsmarkit.com\/www\/images\/0324\/marchsales1_260320241451704.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"161\" \/><\/p>\n<p ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ihsmarkit.com\/www\/images\/0324\/marchsales2_260320241451704.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"501\" \/><\/p>\n<p >Continued development of battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales<br \/>\nremains an assumption in the longer-term S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility<br \/>\nlight vehicle sales forecast.
