The league was the brainchild of Bill Byrne, who previously worked as a front office worker for the Chicago Fire of the World Football League (WFL). When Byrne approached Chicago sports promoter John Geraty about taking on a franchise in the WBL, Geraty enthusiastically raised the necessary $50,000 from attorney Larry Cooper and personnel firm owner Sherwin Fischer so the group could buy the hometown team.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"xcWj6I\"><strong>Doug Bruno\u2019s side Hustle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"s52Jb6\">Perhaps part of the success also is owed to the team\u2019s coach: longtime DePaul head coach Doug Bruno. <\/p>\n<p id=\"tnN0nE\">Bruno came on board after coaching at the school for two years. Bruno\u2019s path toward coaching is highly unlikely in 2023; he was working as the assistant athletic director at DePaul when the women\u2019s basketball coach went on vacation and he subbed in. Two years later, he was heading the Hustle.<\/p>\n<div id=\"vltAEP\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Always a gift to have former Chicago Hustle &amp; WBL trailblazers stop by campus! <\/p>\n<p>Charlene Jackson, Adrian Mitchell-Newell, Liz Galloway-McQuitter and so many more paved the way for generations to come  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DePaulBall?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DePaulBall<\/a> x <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/legends_lobinc?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@legends_lobinc<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xESWidi1Ra\">pic.twitter.com\/xESWidi1Ra<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 DePaul Women&#8217;s Basketball (@DePaulWBBHoops) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DePaulWBBHoops\/status\/1549498899743657984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 19, 2022<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"uWOr4M\">He explained that he was approached by Geraty while running DePaul\u2019s program. Geraty hoped to use the school\u2019s gym for the Hustle\u2019s games, and Bruno was the man had to ask. \u201cHe\u2019d come to meet me and had seen me practicing &#8230; that\u2019s how he found me as a coach, because I had to negotiate the contract for the Hustle to play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"31pCNs\">\u201cThat\u2019s how he found me,\u201d Bruno added. \u201cI\u2019m sure there was a lot of people they tried to get ahead of me, but then, ultimately, they hired me to be their coach. I coached them for two years in \u201879 and \u201880.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ssAuNv\"><strong>Successes, struggles for the Hustle<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"JAwxEf\">Unlike other teams in the league, the Hustle didn\u2019t struggle to fill seats or get media coverage of their games. Their first game was attended by over 7,000 people who were enthusiastic about women\u2019s basketball. As Bruno put it, \u201cWe were on WGN, a superstation that predated ESPN. WGN was a national cable station that did a lot of sports broadcasting and programming. We were on WGN television, that means we had a national television package. We were covered by both the <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em> and the <em>Chicago Sun-Times<\/em>, both Chicago dailies had a beat writer covering our team.\u201d  Those writers included legendary sports reporter Bill Jauss, who <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagoist.com\/2012\/10\/10\/former_tribune_sportwriter_bill_jau.php\">died in 2012<\/a>. With that kind of advantage, it would be easy to assume the Hustle had it made.<\/p>\n<div id=\"HcGvax\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">For my money, the greatest logo in the history of professional women&#8217;s basketball was the Chicago Hustle. They played in the WBL (Women&#8217;s Basketball League) 1978-81. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8Dj5kjjHeU\">pic.twitter.com\/8Dj5kjjHeU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Vintage Jerseys &amp; Hats (@PolyesterUnis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PolyesterUnis\/status\/1264778124941824001?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 25, 2020<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"Ml531Q\">Unfortunately, the team struggled with many of the same dynamics that caused teams (and ultimately the league) to fold: players weren\u2019t paid on time, media coverage was only a fraction of what men\u2019s teams received and questionable contracts kept some players committed to teams that couldn\u2019t support them. <\/p>\n<p id=\"bBEpnv\">And of course, the bulk of the team\u2019s success was due to the players themselves. As Bruno said, \u201cThey came from all over the country, they truly were pioneers &#8230; they really did come from all parts of the country. They came out of a love for the game, a belief that it could happen. They had no reason to believe it could happen because they\u2019d never seen it happen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"99xSZe\"><strong>Lingering lessons from the WBL <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"yP6jw6\">For a moment in time, the impossible was <em>right there<\/em>\u2014tantalizingly close, but frustratingly out of reach. Even more frustrating is that, as former WBL player Muffet McGraw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swishappeal.com\/wnba\/2023\/8\/21\/23839528\/wnba-ncaa-wbl-womens-professional-basketball-league-muffet-mcgraw-notre-dame-california-dreams\">told <em>Swish Appeal<\/em><\/a>, many of the problems that caused the end of the league are some of the same barriers the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swishappeal.com\/\">WNBA<\/a> faces decades later. Teams weren\u2019t adequately funded, or those who started teams weren\u2019t able to see the process through. <\/p>\n<p id=\"MB2iHO\">As Bruno said, any time you start a league you\u2019re going to lose money\u2014that\u2019s a given. And leagues need more than money, they need an audience to attend games. To get an audience, you need media coverage, and a heck of a lot more than women\u2019s sports get now. <\/p>\n<p id=\"k8FETo\">\u201cI\u2019m not arguing for equal coverage of all men\u2019s sports,\u201d Bruno insisted, \u201cbut come on, throw us a bone and cover it 25% of the time instead of 8% of the time, and we\u2019re gonna get more fans. I think that\u2019s always been an issue, and it was an issue even more so back then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"6dqNFv\">Still, Bruno doesn\u2019t regret his time as the Hustle\u2019s coach. The league was special, and it\u2019s clear that he cherishes the two years spent in it, and the relationships he built as a result.<\/p>\n\n<h2><b>Commercials Cooperation
