There were games during the season in which she only played a handful of minutes, or was held scoreless altogether. In the first game of the NCAA Tournament, she went 0-for-7 from the field. Heading into the national championship game, she averaged six points in 17 minutes for a loaded South Carolina roster, good for 9th most on the team. <\/p>\n<p id=\"Zx79u4\">But when the lights were the brightest\u2014with a record-breaking 18.7 million people watching\u2014Johnson was a superstar. In the national championship game against Iowa, she exploded for a team-high 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Her pair of third quarter 3-pointers helped South Carolina pull away for good, and defeat an Iowa team that had already knocked off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andthevalleyshook.com\/\">LSU<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theuconnblog.com\/\">UConn<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"v9evDR\">In turn, she became the first freshman to lead her team in scoring in the national championship game since Breanna Stewart did it for UConn in 2013. Our team, we want to win. My teammates are just encouraging, always having my back, telling me, \u201cPlay how you play.\u201d So I just did that. I don\u2019t feel pressure because the team that I have and the coaches that I have, no matter if I make a mistake, they\u2019re always going to encourage me.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"LcBFNh\">Johnson praised head coach Dawn Staley and the environment she\u2019s fostered for helping her stay confident. South Carolina enjoyed a perfect 38-0 season\u2014a feat that has only been accomplished 10 times in women\u2019s basketball history.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0DwAmo\">A key to their success was a well-balanced attacked. South Carolina had nine players who averaged at least 6.5 points this season, and no player averaged more than 15 points. On the flip side, Iowa had just four players averaging at least 6.5 points, and South Carolina\u2019s depth was ultimately too much for the Hawkeyes to overcome. Led by Tessa Johnson, South Carolina\u2019s bench exploded for 37 points in the championship game, whereas Iowa\u2019s reserves were held scoreless.<\/p>\n<p id=\"XsHYbd\">Throughout the tournament, so much of the national dialogue centered around Caitlin Clark, UConn\u2019s Paige Bueckers, USC\u2019s JuJu Watkins and some of the nation\u2019s most prominent scorers. But when it was all said and done, it was South Carolina\u2019s bench\u2014a unit that had received relatively little air time\u2014that ensured the Gamecocks would be hoisting the championship trophy. \u201cThe culture that Coach Staley built, the atmosphere, the environment that we\u2019re in\u2014it\u2019s all unselfish people,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s how we win.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"e-image\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"NCAA Women\u2019s Basketball Tournament - National Championship\" data-mask-text=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/thumbor\/ffGoY3hW6xQZOJOSN5mTxnKXeN0=\/400x0\/filters:no_upscale()\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/25381264\/2146853249.jpg\"><br \/>\n      <cite>Photo by Gregory Shamus\/Getty Images<\/cite><figcaption>Raven Johnson and Tessa Johnson celebrate the Gamecocks\u2019 national championship. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"E6d426\">Just a year ago as a senior in high school, Johnson led Minnesota\u2019s Saint Michael Albertville High to a Class 4A state championship, putting up 27 points and grabbing 10 boards. She was named Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year, and was rated a four-star recruit by ESPN. She watched South Carolina lose to Iowa in the Final Four from home, knowing she\u2019d be joining the roster the following season. As a sharp shooter, she felt she could help the Gamecocks space the floor against an Iowa defense that collapsed on Aliyah Boston and South Carolina\u2019s dominant post players. <\/p>\n<p id=\"qNWRB4\">\u201cI was watching the game and I was like, \u2018Wow, I really wish I could help them,\u2019\u201d Johnson said. \u201cAnd the fact that I\u2019m able to do that, it\u2019s amazing.\u201d On Sunday afternoon, Johnson hit 3-of-6 3-pointers to help turn an 11-point deficit into a 12-point win. <\/p>\n<p id=\"qj4M99\">Her teammates praised her preparation. Raven Johnson, who was on the team that fell to Iowa in 2023 and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swishappeal.com\/2024\/4\/9\/24123738\/ncaa-wbb-tournament-national-championship-south-carolina-raven-johnson-iowa-caitlin-clark-defense\">tasked with guarding Caitlin Clark<\/a> in the national championship game, said Tessa Johnson\u2019s name should be in the conversation of elite freshmen players. \u201dShe\u2019s always ready for the moments,\u201d Raven said. \u201cWhen
