Thursday, September 20, 1973 found me in 8th<\/sup> grade at Chardon Middle School in Chardon, Ohio.\u00a0 Walking home my group of friends would often sing the songs we heard on the radio at the top of our voices.\u00a0 A favorite was \u201cBad, Bad Leroy Brown.\u201d\u00a0 The next day the word was all over school.\u00a0 The night before the man who wrote and sung the song, Jim Croce, had been killed in a plane crash.\u00a0 18-months after he had burst onto the scene, he was gone.\u00a0 But in that time he gave the world some of the most memorable songs of all time. \u00a0Jim Croce is gone, but thankfully another talented songwriter is keeping his work alive.\u00a0 His son, A.J.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n With ten albums of his own to his credit, A.J. Croce (Adrian James for the curious) didn\u2019t need to sing his father\u2019s songs to establish his long career.\u00a0 Feeling the time is right, he has recently embarked on a tour called, simply, \u201cCroce Sings Croce.\u201d\u00a0 In preparation for his upcoming appearance at the Kauffman Center in Kansas City on Saturday, April 13th<\/sup>, Mr. Croce took the time so speak with me about the tour, his career and the continued legacy of his fater.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MIKE SMITH:\u00a0 I\u2019m going to get weird here for a second and I apologize.\u00a0 I\u2019m aa63 years old.\u00a0 I had two musical heroes growing up\u2026people whose music not only inspired me but their passion for others.\u00a0 One was Harry Chapin.\u00a0 The other was your dad.\u00a0 I interviewed Harry\u2019s son, Jason, a couple of years ago and it is a true honor and privilege to speak with you.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n A.J. CROCE:\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Thank you.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 You were reluctant to perform your father\u2019s music early in your career.\u00a0 Why are you highlighting it now?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AJC:\u00a0 There were a lot of reasons.\u00a0 One was that I had had success in my own right.\u00a0 I had done well as a songwriter and sideman and musician.\u00a0 I felt a sense of accomplishment.\u00a0 The other part was that I didn\u2019t feel there was any integrity in just jumping in and performing my father\u2019s music.\u00a0 I was a piano player, so I was playing the guitar parts on piano long before I picked up a guitar twenty years ago.\u00a0 It was a challenge.\u00a0 I played jazz and old blues and rock and roll New Orleans music so I was trying to find and conquer the most challenging music out there.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was looking for.\u00a0 That being said, I love my father\u2019s music.\u00a0 There was never a time when I didn\u2019t respect what he had done.\u00a0 I loved his song writing nd guitar playing.\u00a0 I have always been working behind the scenes to try and preserve and promote his legacy of music.\u00a0 I felt that the integrity of my music needed to be intact.\u00a0 I felt it was a little cheap and a little cheesy just to make a few bucks off of playing my dad\u2019s music when I was young.\u00a0 As I got older and picked up the guitar, I found there were times and places in my show where I could throw in a song of his as a surprise.\u00a0 As soon as no one expected me to perform my father\u2019s music it became a lot easier and more fun to throw something in.\u00a0 Having worked with Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin and James Brown\u2026all those iconic R&B artists\u2026I wanted to make a name for myself.\u00a0 It was really important that there be integrity in it.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 When you first started out, was the last name \u201cCroce\u201d a blessing or a hinderance?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AJC:\u00a0 Both.\u00a0 It was both.\u00a0 The blessing was, in some ways, smaller then the hinderance at times.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to have your own identity when you have a name that\u2019s recognizable.\u00a0 You don\u2019t really have the privilege of being heard for yourself.\u00a0 You are heard as the relative of someone who is well-known, maybe for something completely different from what you do.\u00a0 Having the identity of someone else is a challenge.\u00a0 Most people get to succeed and fail on their own merits.\u00a0 I was only able to succeed from the outside perspective on the merits of my father and I was only able to fail on my own merit.\u00a0 I was not concerned with fame and celebrity.\u00a0 I was determined to be the best piano player and songwriter and entertainer that I could possibly be.\u00a0 That was my goal.\u00a0 I probably shot myself in the foot more than a few times because I was more interested in the music than I was in the fame that music brought.\u00a0 I probably turned down many opportunities early in my career that would have been really helpful.\u00a0 I think early on, in the first twenty, twenty-five years of my touring and recording career\u2026of course I wanted people to hear my music.\u00a0 I think I was a little uncompromising.\u00a0 I was a little afraid of what fame might do.\u00a0 I saw what it did to my father.\u00a0 I saw the remnants of it because of his success.\u00a0 There\u2019s a certain part of life you no longer get to experience once you\u2019re no longer anonymous. <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Talking about fame, a lot of people can tell you that Jim Croce died in a plane crash but they don\u2019t know why he was on that plane.\u00a0 He was keeping a promise that he really didn\u2019t have to.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t have to go and do that show, but he did.\u00a0 And that is one of the things I\u2019ve always admired about him.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AJC:\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I mean, every artist has that happen.\u00a0 When you sign a deal to do a concert and miss it, you do your best to make it up.\u00a0 I got snowed out of a concert in Connecticut in February and will go back and play at the end of April.\u00a0 That\u2019s the nature of this business.\u00a0 There are circumstances sometimes that keep you from being where you want to be.\u00a0 Or play where you want to play.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Certainly.\u00a0 My comparison is that between the time he missed the concert and when he went down to do it he became JIM CROCE.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n (QUICK NOTE:\u00a0 Before he became a household name, Jim Croce had to cancel a concert he had scheduled at Northwestern State University in Louisiana due to illness.\u00a0 He promised the promoters that he would make up the show as soon as possible.\u00a0 A year later, now a big star, he had an open date on his current tour, called the school and said he\u2019d be there.\u00a0 Even with two successful albums and a fistful of hit songs, Croce did the show for his originally agreed on fee, $750.\u00a0 Remember when I talked about having passion for others?\u00a0 Jim Croce is a true example. )<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AJC:\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 His career was so brief.\u00a0 His career was eighteen months.\u00a0 I mean he had played semi-professionally for a period of time but his professional career was eighteen months.\u00a0 All of the songs you know were written, finished and recorded and toured in that eighteen-month period of time.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of an astounding thing that so much was accomplished in such a short amount of time.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 You\u2019ve endured a lot of tragedy in your life. (NOTE:\u00a0 Jim Croce died when A.J. was two.\u00a0 When he was four, his mother\u2019s boyfriend beat him so badly he lost sight in both eyes.\u00a0 He regained the sight in his left eye at age 10).\u00a0 Have you ever drawn on that, even subconsciously, for your own music?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AJC:\u00a0 Oh, of course.\u00a0 If I don\u2019t draw on life experience, I\u2019m not doing my job.\u00a0 If I\u2019m not using it in my music then I\u2019m not paying attention or growing.\u00a0 It can\u2019t be a superficial exploration when it comes to writing.\u00a0 There needs to be depth and you need to draw from those things and hopefully gain wisdom and a sense of humor.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t gain a sense of humor from the tragedies of life then you\u2019re missing out on half of what a tragedy can give you.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 \u00a0Do you have a favorite song of your fathers?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AJC:\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I love a lot of his songs.\u00a0\u00a0 Just like all music I have no favorite artist\u2026no favorite song.\u00a0 Music is dso much about mood and emotion.\u00a0 One morning you wake up and you want to hear Edith Piaf.\u00a0 The next morning you wake up and you want to hear Zepplin.\u00a0 Or you want to hear Ray Charles or Fats Waller or Little Richard.\u00a0 Music is about emotion and mood and that\u2019s such a beautiful thing.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 That\u2019s a great answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n AJC: (laughing) Thanks!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n A.J.
