The automotive industry faced one of its worst crises during the
\nyears following the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 when the
\nsemiconductor shortage caused disruptions and delays in light
\nvehicle production globally on an unprecedented scale. So, on April
\n3, 2024, when an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit Taiwan, the
\nstrongest in 25 years, there was a sense of trepidation in the
\nindustry. Taiwan dominates advanced logic chip production,
\nmanufacturing over 90% of leading-edge semiconductors globally.<\/p>\n

With almost all complex automotive chips relying on Taiwanese
\nfoundries like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), Taiwan
\nis an irreplaceable player in the automotive electronics supply
\nchain. While the geographic concentration of production in Taiwan
\nallows impressive economies of scale, it also poses supply
\ncontinuity risks. Natural disasters or geopolitical tensions
\ninvolving Taiwan could quickly ripple through the automotive
\nindustry.<\/p>\n

Impact of earthquake on semiconductor
\nproduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

Semiconductor production is a delicate process, highly
\nsusceptible to even the slightest vibrations. A single tremor can
\npotentially ruin entire batches of precision-made chips, posing
\nsignificant challenges for firms located in quake-prone regions
\nlike Taiwan.<\/p>\n

The industry highly depends on companies like TSMC, one of the
\nlargest contract chipmakers, for 7nm and lower leading-edge process
\nnodes. Any disruption in TSMC's supply of these advanced nodes
\ncould ripple across multiple sectors, disrupting production
\nschedules and delaying product launches.<\/p>\n

The good news for the supply chain is that most semiconductor
\nfirms have reported no significant damage and have begun resuming
\noperations. TSMC was among those affected. The firm immediately
\nhalted some chipmaking machinery and evacuated staff from certain
\nareas. TSMC said in a statement,<\/p>\n

“Overall tool recovery of our fabs reached more than 70% within
\n10 hours of the April 3 earthquake, with new fabs such as the Fab
\n18 facility reaching more than 80%. Apart from certain production
\nlines in areas that experienced a greater seismic impact, equipment
\nin Taiwan fabs have largely been fully recovered as of April 5
\nthanks to the collaborative efforts of TSMC colleagues and our
\nsupplier partners.”<\/p>\n

Several semiconductor and technology manufacturers, such as UMC;
\nMicron, a company specializing in memory and storage chips; and
\nFoxconn, a key supplier for Apple, stated they were assessing the
\npotential effects of the earthquake on their facilities in Taiwan.
\nHowever, they expressed optimism, suggesting that any consequences
\nwould be minimal.<\/p>\n

Specialty memory IC company Windbound said in a press release
\nthat the seismic event triggered self-protection mechanisms in
\ncertain machinery at Winbond's CTSP Fab and Kaohsiung Fab
\nfacilities, but there were no significant disruptions to its
\noperations.<\/p>\n

Nvidia, which relies heavily on TSMC for sourcing many of its
\nchips, announced that it anticipated no disruptions to its supply
\nchain. “After consulting with our manufacturing partners, we don't
\nexpect any impact on our supply from the Taiwan earthquake,” Nvidia
\nsaid in a statement.<\/p>\n

Heavy reliance on Taiwan foundries<\/strong><\/p>\n

The recent earthquake further highlights the electronics
\nindustry's vulnerability to regionally concentrated parts of the
\nsemiconductor supply chain. In recent years, chipmakers and
\ngovernments, including the US government, have announced
\nsubstantial investments aimed at diversifying chip production.<\/p>\n

However, the reliance on Taiwan will not diminish anytime
\nsoon.
\nDespite TSMC's plans to establish new semiconductor fabs in Japan,
\nGermany, and the United States in recent years, the realization of
\nthese plans has encountered delays. Particularly, the anticipated
\nsecond factory in Arizona, initially slated for operation this year
\nfollowing its announcement in 2022, has faced repeated setbacks.
\nTSMC's chips are integral to tech giants like Apple, Qualcomm,
\nNvidia and AMD, underpinning crucial sectors such as AI where chip
\nsupply is already strained.<\/p>\n

While the sector has escaped repercussions this time thanks to
\nwell-established disaster recovery and risk mitigation the quake
\nserved as a timely reminder of the fragility of semiconductor
\nsupply. A few minds will no doubt be refocused on dispersing
\nsemiconductor supply chain risk following the events of April
\n3.<\/p>\n
