Cars have been the stars of video games since the
\nbeginning. Now video games are becoming a star attraction in cars.
\nEyeing the broader social impact of technologies such as high-speed
\nconnectivity and high-definition screens, and the trend towards
\nsemi-autonomous driving and shared mobility, automakers are
\nbuilding their next-generation vehicles with gaming as a core part
\nof the in-car user experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why are automakers so upbeat about in-car gaming? A recent
\nindustry report suggests the global gaming industry is poised to
\nmaintain its recent rapid growth and is on track to reach $321
\nbillion by 2026. And then there's this: There are about twice as
\nmany gamers worldwide as there are vehicles on the road. For
\nautomakers, this translates into a lucrative opportunity that
\nreadily aligns with their focus on generating recurring
\nsubscription-based revenue streams.<\/p>\n

Robust low-latency 5G networks allow gamers to connect
\ninternet-enabled cars to digital game stores from anywhere. Cloud
\ngaming platforms are allowing users to enjoy high-quality, lag-free
\nexperiences without the need for huge and expensive hard drives.
\nWith compatible infotainment systems and powerful graphics
\nprocessing units (GPUs), high-caliber 3D gaming engines are
\nrendering in-car gaming experiences at par with home gaming
\nconsoles.<\/p>\n

While games are already being played in many vehicles (mostly
\nTesla) and money is being made mostly at the distribution level
\n(subscription packages from Holoride are a proof), the in-car
\ngaming market will remain nascent in the short term – with more
\nbuzz than meaningful business potential for most developers.
\nBespoke automotive gaming experiences are still many years away,
\nbut the in-car gaming platforms previewed at the CES clearly hint
\nat what these products might look like.<\/p>\n

Can the car be an ideal game console?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The short answer is, yes. Many modern cars already have a lot of
\nphysical systems that can synchronize with a game's VR features.
\nMany tactile and sensory effects can be achieved and blended with
\nwhat is going on in the virtual game environment.<\/p>\n

For example, warm or cold air could stream out from the
\nventilation nozzles, an on-screen explosion could be intensified by
\nsudden activation of the seat heating, and the seats could shake
\nabruptly, and the seat belt tensioner tighten up if a gamer bangs
\ninto a wall virtually. Additionally, vehicle scenting could be used
\nto infuse the vehicle's interior with appropriate aromas \u2014
\ngamers will smell fresh grass when they cross a meadow, for
\ninstance, or the stench of burning rubber on the racetrack.<\/p>\n

For now, however, unless the vehicle has screens in the rear
\npassenger area, or a front screen that can mask content from the
\ndriver (as in the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class), gaming is currently
\nsomething only possible while the vehicle is stationary. In the
\nmedium- and long-term, the highly automated vehicles of the future
\nwill allow everyone inside the vehicle to indulge in gaming
\nexperiences at their leisure.<\/p>\n
