However, while filming <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/tag\/the-empire-strikes-back\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The<\/em> <em>Empire Strikes Back<\/em><\/a> in the late 1970\u2019s a snowstorm made director <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/tag\/irvin-kershner\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Irvin Kershner<\/a><\/strong> get creative.<\/p>\n<p>In a video uploaded to the YouTube channel, Hollywood\u2019s Master Storytellers, <em>Empire<\/em> director Irvin Kershner recounts a story about the first day of shooting in Norway. Part of the shoot was meant to capture the many outdoor scenes in the film that take place on the ice planet Hoth.<\/p>\n<p>However, when Kershner woke up on the first day of shooting there was a major snowstorm that was so bad that he, the cast, and the crew, were all practically snowed in at the hotel. According to Kershner, it was 26 degrees below zero.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Luke sees Ben on Hoth\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sw7uPoNuztg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;%23038;origin=https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He figured to get some shots of <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/tag\/mark-hamill\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Hamill<\/a> that he needed anyway, depicting him alone outside the harsh conditions of snowy Hoth. So, they tried doing shots just outside of the hotel, but the film would crack because it was so cold.<\/p>\n<p>Kershner realized that he had to keep the cameras inside while filming. So he was able to set up a camera in the hotel kitchen doorway.<\/p>\n<p>The director explained that he then had Mark Hamill run outside alone as they filmed him from the comfortable confines of the hot kitchen. \u201cI put the camera in the doorway of the kitchen. The crew was nice and cozy in the back. Poor Mark\u2026he\u2019d run out in the snow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Kershner yelled \u201cCut,\u201d Mark would run back to the kitchen and get warmed up before having to go back outside for next shot.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Filming &quot;The Empire Strikes Back&quot; in Norway - from Hollywood&#039;s Master Storytellers\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/49NI_Ygc3Mg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;%23038;origin=https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The scenes taken for this sequence were when Luke Skywalker is running from the Wampa, which Kershner describes as the \u201csnow monster.\u201d Kershner says that one of the shots is a closeup, and that Mark had to lay in the snow, yet did so just two feet away from the hotel\u2019s kitchen door.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/tag\/star-wars\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Star Wars<\/a><\/em> fans certainly can envision Luke Skywalker laying in the snow after seeing the Force-ghost of Ben Kenobi. If you watch the behind the scenes footage, you can see them filming outside, nowhere near a hotel, but that particular closeup shot of Mark\u2019s face is not seen, which seems to be the very shot Kershner was explaining.<\/p>\n<p>Next time you watch <em>The<\/em> <em>Empire Strikes Back<\/em>, you\u2019ll now see Mark Hamill in the snow, barely calling out Ben\u2019s name and now know that
