At one of its most pivotal times, Tobias S\u00fchlmann reveals what Woking’s new cars will look like<\/p>\n

\n

When McLaren<\/a> Automotive chief design officer Tobias S\u00fchlmann is looking for inspiration, he doesn\u2019t have to go far to find it: he just needs to go out for a sandwich.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day when I go for lunch, I walk along this boulevard and suck in the history of the brand, and that\u2019s something we need to think of for the future,\u201d he says, gesturing along the main atrium of the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking.<\/p>\n

Along its vast length there sits an incredible display of machinery: race cars include Bruce McLaren\u2019s M8D Can-Am monster, Alain Prost\u2019s Formula 1 title-winning MP4\/2B and Lando Norris\u2019s current MCL38, while road cars range from the fabled F1 and the transformative MP4-12C <\/a>to the Speedtail and Elva.<\/p>\n

The machinery is a reminder of McLaren\u2019s rich heritage \u2013 and S\u00fchlmann is using it to chart a new direction for the future. \u201cI ask my team to walk down here, find some details and then develop a new interpretation of them,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen you see the boulevard, you get inspired \u2013 and you realise you can do a lot with this brand.\u201d<\/p>\n

This line of cars also explains why S\u00fchlmann was lured back to McLaren \u2013 he served as Special Projects design chief in 2021, working on the virtual-racer-made-real Solus GT<\/a> \u2013 from his role as Bentley<\/a>\u2019s head of exterior design last September.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve worked at a lot of companies, from big manufacturers to smaller firms,\u201d the German says of a career that has also included stops at Volkswagen<\/a>, Bugatti<\/a> and Aston Martin<\/a>. \u201cMcLaren is my dream company.\u201d<\/p>\n

S\u00fchlmann\u2019s return to the supercar maker comes at a pivotal moment, with the McLaren Group now owned fully by the Bahraini state investment fund after recent financial troubles.<\/p>\n

With ex-Ferrari<\/a> man Michael Leiters in charge, the automotive division is looking at a future range expansion \u2013 one likely to include SUVs<\/a> and electric cars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Much of S\u00fchlmann\u2019s work since his return has been to develop a new design language, which will be reflected in three external design signatures: two symmetrical elements and a low nose at the front; a long nose, short rear and forward-leaning \u2018performance line\u2019 on the side; and an \u2018open\u2019 back end with a horizontal element.<\/p>\n

Those stylistic hooks have been developed based on common features of racing and road-going McLarens \u2013 but, S\u00fchlmann insists, that won\u2019t lead to retro designs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe come from racing, and everything is part of that,\u201d he continues. \u201cWe need to look into the whole brand and into its DNA to understand and shape the future. We have a strong fan base and a strong customer base, and people buy and love our products because of our racing heritage. We didn\u2019t start a car company and then start a racing team; we did it the other way round. That\u2019s fascinating to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

While McLaren\u2019s racing history dates back to 1963, the Automotive division is just 14 years old. Even so, it has developed a strong identity.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone can look at a McLaren and know it\u2019s a McLaren,\u201d says S\u00fchlmann. But that is, in part, because the shared base of many of the firm\u2019s models means they can all look a little similar. That will also change in the future with the new language, promises S\u00fchlmann.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea is to create different characters and different identities for different products and separate the models more strongly from each other,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople won\u2019t just recognise a McLaren; they will recognise the model.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, McLaren has only hinted at the new design language in a few explanatory sketches, but S\u00fchlmann and his team are on the road to creating a new generation of cars \u2013 even if he won\u2019t discuss specifics about them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely shifting forward,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is one of the biggest shifts in history, because the brand is changing and we will see more in the portfolio. We need to look into different powertrains as well, so this new language is important. It\u2019s not a gimmick.\u201d<\/p>\n

S\u00fchlmann won\u2019t discuss in detail any plans McLaren has for future electric vehicles but says: \u201cWhen we look into doing those sorts of cars, we will do it the McLaren way. When we do a McLaren, the badge should stand for something.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to look into proportions, but you will definitely see a short rear overhang, a long front overhang, some form of performance line and openings in the front and rear. So you will say \u2018yes, that is a McLaren\u2019. It will be a recognisable, powerful statement.\u201d<\/p>\n

One key trend that will apply to all models, whatever their power source, is form following function. S\u00fchlmann maintains that functionality will remain a key element of the design. \u201cYou see this in our past models, and you will see it in future ones,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

That link between functionality and form is perhaps best seen in S\u00fchlmann\u2019s Solus GT, which serves as an example of McLaren\u2019s desire \u201cto push the boundaries and go beyond\u201d, and a key element of that approach is to make the technology visible and celebrate it.<\/p>\n

S\u00fchlmann continues: \u201cWe want to celebrate the parts. So if you don\u2019t need an opening, leave it. If you need a different surface, work on it until it\u2019s perfect. We work hand in hand with engineering and aerodynamics, and that leads us to a very special aesthetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
