“Data is the new oil,” as the adage goes. This is remarkably
\ntrue for the automotive industry, where always-connected,
\nsoftware-defined vehicles are constantly exchanging data, updating
\nin real time over the air. The mobility ecosystem is increasingly
\nemploying big-data analytics to gather actionable insights on
\ncustomer behavior, understand product performance and gain
\ncompetitive advantages.<\/p>\n

Where there's data, there could be data
\ntheft<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As cars transform into rolling data repositories, more lingering
\nconcerns over data privacy and security are beginning to hinder the
\nfull potential of connected cars, which collect a lot more data
\nthan expected. A typical connected vehicle can generate nearly 25
\nGB of data per hour and collect information from more than 100
\ndifferent datapoints, thanks to embedded features including
\ngeolocation and navigation, companion apps, biometrics, voice
\nrecognition, on-board diagnostics and driver assistance.<\/p>\n

Additionally, cars can collect data in the background via
\ncameras, microphones, sensors and connected phones and apps.
\nSensitive data captured from connected vehicles can include
\npersonal identifiable information (PII), location, behavior and
\nfinancial data from customers, as well as intellectual property
\nrelated to the vehicle and services provided.<\/p>\n

Data is also collected from users' browsing habits, test drives
\nat dealerships, and from third parties such as marketing agencies
\nand data collection providers to develop inferences about a
\ndriver's intelligence, abilities, characteristics, preferences and
\nmore. This sensitive data flows through many environments and
\nplatforms, both on-premises and in the cloud, and is susceptible to
\ncyberattacks.<\/p>\n

Protecting the privacy of consumers<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Mozilla Foundation, a US-based nonprofit internet research
\norganization, revealed startling findings on how automotive
\nstakeholders are dealing with data privacy and protection. Mozilla
\nresearchers looked at the privacy terms of 25 global car brands and
\nconcluded that their cars were “the official worst category of products for
\nprivacy”<\/strong><\/a> they had ever reviewed. Also, according to a
\n2023 report from Upstream Security, data breaches account for 37%
\nof all cybersecurity incidents and backend server attacks make up
\n40% of all cyberattacks in the automotive industry.<\/p>\n
