To develop more efficient e-motors, OEMs and suppliers
\nmust innovate, balance design control with outsourcing, and manage
\nsupply chain risks.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The electric motor (e-motor) market is forecasted to increase
\nrapidly over the next decade. More efficient electric propulsion
\ntechnologies like the eAxle and its components drive this
\ngrowth.<\/p>\n

With major markets like India aiming to electrify its
\ntransportation, how will original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
\nbalance design and technology needs to sustainably source and
\nproduce eAxles at scale?<\/p>\n

Innovation in motor design and power<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The eAxle is a compact, integrated assembly that combines the
\nmotor, power electronics, and transmission essential to an electric
\nvehicle's (EV) infrastructure. S&amp;P Global Mobility estimates
\nover 122 million e-motors will be produced by 2035, with over 70%
\nof them using eAxles, driven by advancements in power density and
\nefficiency.<\/p>\n

In particular, e-motor designers focus on achieving higher
\nspecific power, which measures the power output per unit of weight.
\nHigh specific power gives greater power output in a lighter and
\nsmaller motor. This phenomenon translates to improved energy
\nefficiency, more extended range, and better overall system
\nperformance for an EV.<\/p>\n

Power trends show an average increase in specific power by 35%
\nfrom one generation to another. This trend is the result of
\ninnovative strategies by suppliers like Bosch, Valeo, and others
\nthat either focus on augmenting power while maintaining weight,
\nreducing weight while keeping power constant, or ideally achieving
\ngains in both power and weight simultaneously. It will be incumbent
\nupon manufacturers to understand the trade-offs and choose the
\neAxle configuration for their specific use case.<\/p>\n

System designers have also made progress in improving motor
\nspeed. S&amp;P Global Mobility forecasts that 19% of the Indian
\nmarket demand by 2035 will be for motors capable of operating at
\nspeeds above the 20,000 RPM limit. Manufacturers prioritize
\nhigh-performance winding technologies like hairpin winding to
\nachieve more thermally efficient and power-dense motors capable of
\nmaintaining these higher speeds.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Winding technology, which involves arranging coils within the
\nmotor, is a crucial factor in optimizing motor performance,
\nefficiency, and power density. A hairpin winding design is
\npreferred as it minimizes losses and maximizes fill factor – the
\nratio of the amount of copper wire used in the winding to the total
\navailable space within the stator.<\/p>\n

Motor efficiency trends<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) have emerged as the
\nindustry standard among the different motor types due to their
\nsuperior efficiency and power density. These attributes make them
\nhighly suitable for electric vehicles where performance and range
\nare critical. However, their reliance on rare earth materials,
\nnecessary for their strong magnetic fields, poses cost and ethical
\nsourcing challenges.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The industry is exploring alternatives to PMSMs, such as
\ninduction and externally excited motors, which do not require rare
\nearth elements but may have varying weight, power, and efficiency
\ntrade-offs. For instance, Tesla is developing a rare earth-free
\nmagnet that targets lower-cost vehicles. Other OEMs, such as GM and
\nStellantis, also invest in this area.<\/p>\n

The global shift towards sustainability is also influencing the
\nproduction of motors. While PMSMs will continue to dominate the
\nmarket, there is a noticeable trend towards non-magnet-based
\nmotors, which are forecasted to constitute 23% of the global market
\nby 2035. OEMs are keen to reduce dependency on neodymium, a rare
\nearth element used in permanent magnets, which frequently
\nfluctuates in availability and price. By decreasing the use of
\nneodymium in motors, manufacturers can reduce costs and enhance
\nsustainability.<\/p>\n

Major automotive players are investing in recycling and
\nsustainable materials to reduce their products' environmental
\nimpact further. Copper is a critical material in motor construction
\nand assembly. With advancements in wire technology, such as the
\ntransition from round to rectangular wires, manufacturers optimize
\ncopper utilization, leading to better efficiency and reduced
\nmaterial use.<\/p>\n

Mainland China is the leading global supplier of e-motors due to
\nits abundant reserves of rare earth elements. However, investments
\nin material partnerships are reshaping the EV motor production
\nlandscape. For example, BMW iVentures' investment in rare earth
\nelement recycling and Niron Magnetics' development funding for
\nclean earth magnets are just some of the efforts to innovate and
\nsecure supply chains in the EV sector. As major OEMs look to
\ndiversify supply away from mainland China, India stands to gain.
\nNidec and ZF have invested in new plants in Karnataka and Orgadam
\nto increase production.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

As EV adoption grows, the eAxle in-house production levels
\nincreasingly indicate OEMs' strategy to integrate design and
\ncontrol production. By 2030, 68% of eAxles will result from
\nin-house OEM system integration.<\/p>\n

This transition, however, is not devoid of challenges. With
\nrising volumes, OEMs must diversify the supply chain and
\npotentially rely on outsourcing for specific production processes.
\nBy so doing, OEMs can then focus on system integration while
\nleveraging the expertise of specialized suppliers.<\/p>\n

The regional dynamics of eAxle production can vary depending on
\ntechnological capabilities and supply chain constraints. Equity
\nalliances are more favored in regions like Japan and Korea, while
\nNorth America prioritizes in-house production. By 2030, the
\nin-house production of systems that include motor and rotor or
\nstator components will decline to 34%, marking a strategic reliance
\non supply chain partnerships to optimize production efficiency and
\ncost.<\/p>\n

As the EV market matures, efficiency is the central theme, not
\njust in the electric motors but across the entire supply chain,
\nfrom raw materials to final assembly. It will take innovation,
\nstrategic material sourcing, and production efficiency from
\nautomakers, suppliers, and OEMs to drive the future of electric
\nmobility.<\/p>\n
