He\u2019ll grab a ball from the rack at half-court and take a stand-still hook.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0flBZI\">One day, he nailed it, but no one caught it on camera. Mykhailiuk pointed over, pleading for me to have gotten the shot on video, but my phone was down.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cZQhCP\">A few moments later, player development coach Ross McMains stepped onto the hardwood. He started chatting with Mykhailiuk, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/\">Celtics<\/a> wing revealed that he had finally made the shot. But McMains didn\u2019t believe him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"m4uI27\">He asked if it was on film, but no dice. No proof meant no credit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"TpFTWR\">Not long after that, on one of Mykhailiuk\u2019s next few attempts, I had my camera rolling. He sunk the shot and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JackSimoneNBA\/status\/1783239587906695478\">pointed at me in acknowledgment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"VIsSJC\">But McMains was none too pleased.<\/p>\n<div id=\"dDh3Sn\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last time Svi Mykhailiuk made this shot, I didn\u2019t get it on camera. He told me to be ready to film it next time.<\/p>\n<p>Success. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/f13c1FiuNQ\">pic.twitter.com\/f13c1FiuNQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jack Simone (@JackSimoneNBA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JackSimoneNBA\/status\/1783239587906695478?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 24, 2024<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"Z590O5\">He looked at me and expressed his sarcastic disappointment that I had gotten the shot on camera, waving in my direction as if to say, \u201cDon\u2019t give Svi the satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"n0x3xs\">Mykhailiuk then rolled into his normal workouts, where he and McMains\u2019 pre-game ritual begins. If Mykhailiuk misses his first shot, he has to run all the way down to the other side of the court and back. And every time he does, a smile creeps across McMains\u2019 face.<\/p>\n<div id=\"1cjHNk\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5NryaOaa_rQ?rel=0\" style=\"top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" scrolling=\"no\" allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"GeKBVA\">That smile is always there. <\/p>\n<p id=\"MDYzzy\">Whether he\u2019s making Mykhailiuk jog down the court, guarding guys in a shooting drill, or jokingly upset that I got a trick shot on camera, he\u2019s constantly smiling.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Q82Dfe\">Even when Xavier Tillman calls him out on the bench to come run through workouts with him, McMains loves it. It\u2019s a love that pushed him to make history, even if there was no one there to see it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<div id=\"DwzPVs\">\n<div data-anthem-component=\"aside:12336551\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"Ica3TY\">\u201cRoss, more than likely, made the very first basket of the millennium,\u201d said Shea Frazee, a well-respected trainer and close friend of McMains.<\/p>\n<p id=\"GTFJTF\">McMains cemented himself in basketball lore without anyone knowing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"jtpgho\">\u201cHe was living in New Zealand at the time, and they get the new year first,\u201d said Frazee. \u201cSo, he, right at 12, made the very first bucket of the millennium. And Ross might like basketball as much or more than anybody I\u2019ve ever known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"1artCc\">Though he was born in New Hampshire, McMains grew up on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. He moved back to the United States at age 11 and eventually attended Santa Barbara High School.<\/p>\n<p id=\"tRV73f\">Even as a high schooler, coaching was the plan.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9lDD4E\">\u201cI think Ross has been trying to coach since he picked up a basketball,\u201d said Charlie Torres, a highly-regarded trainer for many NBA players and McMains\u2019 long-time friend. \u201cI\u2019ve heard stories of Ross going to coaches clinics when he was like a sophomore in high school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"6M4DRE\">After high school, McMains returned to where he grew up and at roughly 18 years old, took a job with the New Zealand Breakers as a video coordinator in 2007. But it didn\u2019t take him long to head back stateside, as he moved to Los Angeles roughly a year later to help train various pro players.<\/p>\n<p id=\"qfSNjf\">From there, McMains ran NBA pre-draft prep for two years before working with players in Latvia, France, and China. He then studied at Santa Monica College from 2008 to 2010 and at John Cabot University in Rome in 2011. There, he gained a greater understanding of European basketball, expanding his hoops palate. <\/p>\n<p id=\"L9Fta8\">Before his coaching career fully began, McMains already had one of the worldliest perspectives in the space.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"UTmP19\"><q>\u201cI think Ross has been trying to coach since he picked up a basketball.\u201d<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"6qvvNm\">\u201cI think having an American dad, a Kiwi mom\u2014he grew up on this little island in New Zealand, Waiheke Island, so he had a really unique kind of upbringing,\u201d said Dean Vickerman, the head coach of Melbourne United, who McMains coached under during the 2019-20 season. <\/p>\n<p id=\"7gD8vs\">\u201cLiving on some boats in different places. And I think that was certainly a part of the travel bug, that his parents would bounce around from different places, and I think he grabbed some of that. But there was always a thirst for knowledge about different cultures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"A0y2M6\">McMains converted his global expertise into ball knowledge.<\/p>\n<p id=\"5Y6zya\">\u201cAnywhere around the world, he\u2019s got an opportunity to either learn something himself or add some knowledge to someone else,\u201d said Vickerman. \u201cSo, yeah, he\u2019s pretty rounded in his perspective of the game, and I think the way that he can teach the game is from a perspective of, just that round, broad approach to what Europeans are doing, what the Aussies, what the Kiwis, what the Serbians have done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-end-para\" id=\"lq8dHD\">\u201cSo, I really believe that when you have him as a coach, you\u2019re getting a high-level perspective of basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"e-image\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Maine Celtics basketball\" data-mask-text=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/thumbor\/41kmZqQuhGAkJqtB8e_ci3qP-go=\/400x0\/filters:no_upscale()\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/25453266\/1245772557.jpg\"><br \/>\n      <cite>Staff photo by Derek Davis\/Portland Press Herald via Getty Images<\/cite><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<p class=\"p--has-dropcap\" id=\"3eZNjk\">McMains has gained invaluable insight at every stop of his worldwide coaching tour, which has helped him establish his status as one of the greatest basketball minds around the globe.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2L15ko\">\u201cEveryone knows he\u2019s a genius, basketball-wise,\u201d said Isaac Fotu, who McMains coaches with the Tall Blacks.<\/p>\n<p id=\"xPKyAa\">\u201cOne of the smartest basketball brains that I\u2019ve been around,\u201d said Vickerman.<\/p>\n<p id=\"uOjZ8w\">\u201cEverything on the court or within the organization, I consider Ross to be as intelligent and genius-level as one would get,\u201d said Frazee.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8CyEEl\">McMains\u2019 eye for the sport goes past the court. He\u2019s reading and teaching the game in every aspect of his life, from the hardwood to a bag of Lay\u2019s potato chips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-end-para\" id=\"Y5wFa8\">\u201c[He\u2019s] always [been] a student of the game,\u201d said former NBA player Nigel Hayes, who McMains coached in Westchester. \u201cLike, there\u2019s a way to talk about basketball, and then there\u2019s a way where it organically is just like, you\u2019d be looking at chips, and the way the chip cracks, [and] he\u2019s like, \u2018Well, see the way that chip cracked, that\u2019s like the same crack that you need to cut on the court. You know what I mean? He needs his roses. His bouquet. He needs the whole s***.\u201d<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p--has-dropcap\" id=\"o9YnYG\">Beyond the bag of chips, McMains\u2019 experience from his many stops has allowed him to develop a keen sense of what the next trend will be.<\/p>\n<p id=\"D51QaD\">\u201cTo be like a basketball savant is a really hard thing because the game is always changing,\u201d said Torres. \u201cIt\u2019s always moving. Like fashion. And Ross is usually five years ahead of that fashion statement. So, he looks a little crazy. But then it\u2019s like, you look back five years later, and it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, Ross was telling me about this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"xYDXHI\">And he\u2019s always keeping those around him updated on where the game is going.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Wecm53\">\u201cSo, now it\u2019s like, everyone\u2019s using stuff that was in Europe five, ten years ago as vocabulary. And who did I hear that first from? Mainly Ross,\u201d Torres said. \u201cYou know what I mean? Like different words, different terms, [and] different ideas. <\/p>\n<p id=\"ofE11N\">\u201cI mean, the guy needs his f****** flowers. You know what I mean? He needs his roses. His bouquet. He needs the whole s***. Because [he\u2019s] advancing the game. He does it daily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"GDUXP9\">Even when the world shut down because of COVID, McMains still found a way to push the game forward. Torres said that he would set up Zoom calls where he would \u201ccome up with special situations, and they\u2019d start a timer like it was a timeout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"ltRn9E\">\u201cGenius,\u201d said Torres. \u201cIt was giving us all our coaching rush.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"fJpAog\">For all the work he\u2019s put into studying the game, McMains has always been able to translate it into his coaching. Getting his message across to players has always been a strength.<\/p>\n<p id=\"QAjDhR\">\u201cHe\u2019s not going to do a workout with someone without spending the hours beforehand,\u201d said Vickerman. \u201cKnowing as much as he can about people, and then knowing the areas of improvement, and then probably having some video ready of [the] best practice in the world of someone who does this skill that they might be able to pass on or try and see a different way of doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"Fw5U2j\">McMains methodically prepares everything he teaches on the court. Every player he coaches is treated as an individual. Rather than applying general ideas across the board, he takes the time to carefully cultivate detailed workouts and developmental plans for each of them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ROXnBB\">It\u2019s why players are endlessly itching to get in the gym with him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"h9bxu5\">\u201cEvery workout you do with him is specific to your position and you as a player,\u201d said Fotu. \u201cIt\u2019s not just any cliche drills he\u2019s going through, it\u2019s specific to what you\u2019re going to be doing in the game and what you need to improve on, [and] what he feels you need to improve on as a player, which was super helpful, especially in our camps. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-end-para\" id=\"VhuXPL\">\u201cEveryone would be lining up to get a workout in with Ross before or after practice because they know how beneficial it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"e-image\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Boston Celtics (104) Vs. He takes personal anecdotes and turns them into hilarious ways of pushing players forward.<\/p>\n<p id=\"hOEIED\">\u201cI hate to sound like that person, [and] this has nothing to do with it, but I\u2019m vegan,\u201d Hayes explained with a laugh. \u201cI\u2019m not trying to be <em>that <\/em>vegan, alright? I\u2019m not doing it. This is not where this is going. But anyways, my diet pertains to the story because, during games, he would always come up and be like, \u2018Alright you f****** vegan, use that plant power.\u2019 And like, that was our thing\u2014plant power in the fourth quarter. <\/p>\n<p id=\"Xf8Ak0\">\u201cWhen there was like five minutes left in the game, we were always like, \u2018Plants don\u2019t get tired.\u2019 So that was always our little thing. He always had things that he could say to different guys that were their little inside jokes, if you will, or inside motivation. Yeah, that\u2019s, again, something else I just remembered. Plant power in the fourth quarter. <\/p>\n<p id=\"8Op1iL\">\u201cI actually told myself that two weeks ago, and I forgot where it came from. But in my mind, I was on the bench like, \u2018Alright, plant power. We got to power through.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"6s8Z5Z\">It\u2019s a perfect blend of humor and intensity.<\/p>\n<p id=\"qaFkRy\">\u201cYou know, they\u2019ll call players, like, this player is a dog, or that player is a dog, and that just means they\u2019re willing to take the extra level of intensity and fight to the competitive situation,\u201d said Frazee. \u201cAnd I guess you call coaches less that way, but Ross is a dog as a coach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"OGdOPW\">He pours his heart into helping his guys improve, doing anything he can to give them an advantage, even if that means benching a player during a workout.<\/p>\n<p id=\"SoafeS\">Once, while trying to coach a player about shot selection, he had to take matters into his own hands.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f2O37Z\">\u201cRoss [was] trying to, over the course of weeks, beat this into this person\u2019s head,\u201d Frazee said. \u201cAnd they get into a drill where there\u2019s a good amount of autonomy to take any shot you want within the context of the action they\u2019re working out of. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-end-para\" id=\"5Q0I95\">\u201cAnd this player shoots like a 17-foot pull-back jump shot, and Ross just makes the loudest horn sound you could ever imagine and tells him to go to the bench because he\u2019s subbing him out of the game [even though] it was an individual workout. Every day is Disneyland for Ross.\u201d<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p--has-dropcap\" id=\"RSiyDq\">McMains carries himself with a radiating sense of elation at all times.<\/p>\n<p id=\"jhqP3W\">\u201cThere\u2019s a joy and a fun element that he that he likes to coach with, and engage people, and find that little competitive edge,\u201d said Vickerman.<\/p>\n<p id=\"V0y2gE\">If McMains is on the court, he\u2019s smiling.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0eidQg\">\u201cI\u2019m sure if Stan Van Gundy saw us in the gym, he would be ripping the hair, or the hair that he has left, out of his head because of how much fun we\u2019re having in the gym,\u201d Torres said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cHd9m6\">With all the work McMains put in to get to Boston, the gig he has now is a dream come true.<\/p>\n<p id=\"qrLdd9\">\u201cHe smiles too much, and he\u2019s having just so much fun. Every day is Disneyland for Ross,\u201d said Torres. \u201cGoing to the arena, going to the gym, going to the practice facility, he\u2019s at f****** Disneyland. Getting to guard Jaylen Brown. Getting to have Jaylen Brown guard him in a scout. Being able to go eat with those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"nBBJTY\">And just as he does with Mykhailiuk pregame, McMains has always made it a habit to mess with his players.<\/p>\n<p id=\"SXSwAG\">\u201cHe\u2019s cracking jokes [with] the guys that were on the team,\u201d said Hayes. \u201cMaking fun of, for example, like, we\u2019d be working on something that you did last game, and he\u2019s making a joke about like, \u2018Yeah, because last game, you tried that move, and it looked like s***.\u2019 You know, something like that. <\/p>\n<p id=\"C3RA7I\">\u201cSo just, like I said, tried to keep things light, tried to keep things good. But yeah, he was tremendous. And obviously, it\u2019s showing off [with] where he\u2019s at now, and he deserves all the success and everything that\u2019s coming to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-end-para\" id=\"yBhj9d\">That\u2019s where McMains\u2019 mastery of the game goes from elite to otherworldly. He doesn\u2019t just know basketball. He doesn\u2019t just coach basketball. He\u2019s a human.\u201d<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p--has-dropcap\" id=\"usV85s\">McMains may love hoops more than anything in the world, but he also loves the people behind the sport. And that\u2019s what makes him remarkable.<\/p>\n<p id=\"UusyTw\">\u201cThat\u2019s the thing that Ross brings,\u201d said Torres. \u201cHe\u2019s not just a professional. He\u2019s a human. And he wants to make sure that these professionals that are away from their homes and families and friends and all that crap, he wants to make sure that he is there for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"sjvwCp\">McMains last coached Hayes in 2018, over five years ago. They only spent one season together.
