Check.<\/li>\n<li>Attractive young woman in swimsuits? Check.<\/li>\n<li>Characters making the dumbest moves possible? Yup.<\/li>\n<li>A masked killer with a creepy backstory? You betcha.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The twist?<\/p>\n<p>Much of the movie is shot from the killer\u2019s perspective. That sets the ultra-glory film apart from previous slasher entries. That conceit isn\u2019t powerful enough at times, and even at a crisp 90 minutes there\u2019s obvious fat to be trimmed.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s gimmick is just enough to recommend it to horror fans. And if you thought the \u201cTerrifier\u201d films pushed the gore envelope, you&#8217;re in for a blood-soaked treat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/in-a-violent-nature-turns-slasher-genre-on-its-ear\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FPqxIeXgiXCM%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Video\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a Violent Nature\u201d has little patience for character development, or even characters. We\u2019re watching a supernatural killer rise from his sleep to slaughter everyone in its path.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s writer\/director Chris Nash\u2019s prime directive. And thank goodness he didn\u2019t go the full Found Footage route. Even though we\u2019re peering over the killer\u2019s shoulder there\u2019s plenty of shots that mimic a conventional film.<\/p>\n<p>Long, slow exhale.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, we pick up scraps of the killer\u2019s origin story. Seems it\u2019s tied to a mentally challenged boy who was accidentally killed years ago, and his poor father met a similar fate.<\/p>\n<p>Enter Johnny (Ry Barrett). He&#8217;ll be your killer for the feature presentation.<\/p>\n<p>His spirit is accidentally summoned as the film opens. The cast\u2019s collective acting chops echo \u201880s-era slasher films in another throwback element.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not a compliment.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the film asks us to watch the killer shuffling through the woods while we wait for something, anything to happen. We stare at the screen as if we were watching one of the \u201cParanormal Activity\u201d films. What will move next?<\/p>\n<p>More often than not, it&#8217;s just &#8230; nothing. There&#8217;s plenty of walking, though.<\/p>\n<p>Remember how Randal described the \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d franchise as \u201cthree movies of people walking to a f***ing volcano\u201d in \u201cClerks II?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d hate \u201cIn a Violent Nature.\u201d (Adult language in the following clip)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/in-a-violent-nature-turns-slasher-genre-on-its-ear\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FRPl5MeXIM8E%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Video\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still fascinating to watch the beast\u2019s scarred, bald head as he presses on. He&#8217;s a force of nature. That approach still leaves too much time for us to check our smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>For every painful stretch, there\u2019s another that makes us sit up straight.<\/p>\n<p>One, strictly for gore-hounds, shows the killer methodically slicing and dicing his victim. Another, shot from overhead, is a brilliant twist on a typical kill sequence.<\/p>\n<p>You marvel at the evil while appreciating how a tired genre can suddenly feel so alive.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s little in the way of plotting or depth. It\u2019s a revenge yarn, but even that angle is loosely applied. We\u2019re here for the kills, with a monster that\u2019s unafraid to flash its bottomless cruelty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/horror-movies-box-office-smile-m3gan-nope\/\"><strong>RELATED: WHY HORROR MOVIES ARE HAVING A MOMENT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s third act suggests a shock for the ages. We don\u2019t get what we expect, a quality seen through much of the movie. That willingness to defy convention is shrewd on paper, but sometimes horror tropes shouldn&#8217;t be denied.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the film\u2019s tension comes from audience expectations. We wait for things that almost always happen in horror movies. That awareness powers much of \u201cViolent Nature.\u201d It also reminds us that genre films, no matter the inventive style applied to them, must deliver the goods.<\/p>\n<p>When they don\u2019t \u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>HiT or Miss<\/strong>: \u201cIn a Violent Nature\u201d serves up genre thrills in ways we haven&#8217;t seen before. The bad news?
