The \u201cFinal Girl\u201d remains a horror movie staple.<\/strong><\/p>\n

She\u2019s the last woman standing in a slasher film, the plucky gal who survives the rampage of Michael, Freddy or Jason.<\/p>\n

Call the heroine of \u201cTotally Killer\u201d the \u201cInsufferable Girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, we\u2019re meant to root for her survival, but along the way this social justice warrior lectures anyone in her path.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s problematic! That\u2019s offensive! That\u2019s sexist!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s exhausting.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s just one reason “Totally Killer” can\u2019t find that sweet horror-comedy groove. It\u2019s neither scary nor funny, and the few glib bullseyes can\u2019t make up for the dozens of missed opportunities.<\/p>\n

Kiernan Shipka is Jamie, a typical 21st century teen who resents anything her momma does or says. Said mom, played by \u201cModern Family\u201d alum Julie Bowen, harbors a dark secret that dates back to the 1980s.<\/p>\n

Three of mom’s high school classmates were murdered by the \u201cSweet Sixteen\u201d killer, a fiend who comes back nearly 40 years later to stalk Bowen\u2019s character.<\/p>\n

Good thing Jamie\u2019s best friend is a super-scientist who created a time machine in her spare time. Jamie uses the device to go back to 1987 and try to stop the serial killer before he can wipe out Mom\u2019s friends.<\/p>\n

And Mom.<\/p>\n

The setup offers a ripe culture clash scenario, from obvious fashion faux pas to other changes over the years. Screenwriters David Matalon, Sasha Perl-Raver and Jen D\u2019Angelo instead lean into Jamie\u2019s woke bona fides, letting her lecture everyone around her how \u201cwrong\u201d they are about \u2026 everything.<\/p>\n

A simple eye roll might suffice, but Jamie is too righteous for that.<\/p>\n

None of this would crush the film if not for its unrelenting mediocrity. The kills are boring, the villain as generic as his vanilla mask and good luck getting past a smile or two on the comedy front.<\/p>\n

Jamie\u2019s mom is a Mean Girl on steroids, another intriguing subplot that doesn\u2019t go anywhere. And having Jamie call her younger mother “Mom” but turned into “Mamacita” not once but twice \u2026 is a running gag that pulled a calf muscle the first time \u2018round.<\/p>\n

A few cultural clashes land, like how too many parents smoked in their cars during the 1980s. It’s also amusing to recall the lax security measures schools employed in the analog age.<\/p>\n
