Advancements<br \/>\nin technology\u2014particularly Advanced Driver Assistance Systems<br \/>\n(ADAS) and autonomous driving\u2014are reshaping consumer<br \/>\npreferences and driving purchasing decisions.<\/p>\n<p >Some examples of <a href=\"https:\/\/autotechinsight.ihsmarkit.com\/shop\/product\/5003512\/adas-from-optional-to-essential-technologies-throughout-the-vehicle\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how this technology has<br \/>\nevolved<\/a>: Major automakers are investing in ADAS technologies<br \/>\nfor enhanced safety and full autonomy. Chassis and suspension<br \/>\nsystems are also changing to accommodate ADAS, automation and<br \/>\nelectrification. The integration of ADAS and 5G is further driving<br \/>\nvehicle connectivity innovation and increasing cybersecurity<br \/>\ndemand. Automotive interiors are adopting driver monitoring systems<br \/>\n(DMS) and occupant monitoring systems (OMS) owing to regulations<br \/>\nand automation.<\/p>\n<p >S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility surveyed 8,000 consumers across eight<br \/>\ncountries in 2024, shedding light on the evolving landscape of<br \/>\nconsumer expectations and behaviors in the era of autonomous<br \/>\ndriving. The survey highlights the growing interest and reliance on<br \/>\nADAS features among consumers globally.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Here are the top 9 highlights from the<br \/>\nfindings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul >\n<li><strong>ADAS Popularity:<\/strong> The survey revealed that more<br \/>\nthan half of the global respondents have some degree of familiarity<br \/>\nwith ADAS features. The features people are most familiar with are<br \/>\npark assist, collision warning, and lane assistance. We can<br \/>\nconclude that respondents are most familiar with low-level autonomy<br \/>\ndriving features, and this can be explained because most automakers<br \/>\nalready offer them as standard on their top trims and optional on<br \/>\ntheir lower trims.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>ADAS Desirability:<\/strong> The annual survey showed<br \/>\nagain a high interest in advanced driving features. For the fourth<br \/>\nyear in a row, blind spot detection was a consistent favorite among<br \/>\nconsumers, while driver facial monitoring remained the least<br \/>\ndesirable feature. This might be attributed to privacy<br \/>\nconcerns.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Desirability vs. Cost:<\/strong> We found that the<br \/>\nfeatures users are most familiar with are the ones they are least<br \/>\nwilling to pay extra for. This could be the result of current high<br \/>\nmarket penetration; consumers may think that these safety features<br \/>\nare more basic and should be built into the base price of the<br \/>\nvehicle. The exception to this trend is night vision as it is<br \/>\nhighly desired and worth paying extra for. Other features reveal a<br \/>\ngap between desirability and willingness to pay, underlining the<br \/>\ncomplexity of consumer preferences.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regional Variations:<\/strong> Market dynamics differ<br \/>\nacross regions, with strong demand in mainland China and India but<br \/>\ngreater price sensitivity in Japan, emphasizing the need for<br \/>\ntailored product offerings and pricing strategies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bundle Preference:<\/strong> Consumers prefer bundled<br \/>\npackages of ADAS features for comprehensive safety solutions,<br \/>\npresenting both opportunities and challenges for automakers in<br \/>\npricing and packaging.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trust in Autonomous Driving:<\/strong> Despite growing<br \/>\ninterest, consumer trust in autonomous driving remains a barrier,<br \/>\nwith a paradoxical willingness to pay extra for full autonomy<br \/>\ndespite it being the least desired feature. Consumers are becoming<br \/>\nincreasingly open to conditional autonomy with a greater<br \/>\nopportunity to emphasize efficiency in operation as a key use case.<br \/>\nAs the level of driver-vehicle interaction continues to decrease,<br \/>\nconsumer skepticism and discomfort is bound to rise. Consumer<br \/>\nperception and trust in these technologies will likely take more<br \/>\ntime to grow and seems to remain with established brands associated<br \/>\nwith quality and reliability. Respondents overall trusted German<br \/>\npremium automakers the most when it comes to the ability to develop<br \/>\nsafe and effective self-driving vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Influencers of Trust:<\/strong> Safety ratings and<br \/>\ncertifications are key influences of consumer trust and most global<br \/>\nrespondents would even be willing to pay extra for vehicles with<br \/>\nhigher safety ratings. This emphasizes the importance of safety in<br \/>\ndriving adoption, while privacy concerns regarding driver<br \/>\nmonitoring persist.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communication and Transparency:<\/strong> Building<br \/>\nconsumer confidence through transparent communication, rigorous<br \/>\ntesting, and regulatory compliance is essential for widespread<br \/>\nacceptance of autonomous technologies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Closing the Gap:<\/strong> Bridging the divide between<br \/>\nconsumer expectations and market offerings requires addressing<br \/>\ntrust issues, regional variations, and effectively communicating<br \/>\nthe benefits of autonomous driving.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p >The survey provided valuable insights into the evolving<br \/>\nlandscape of consumer preferences and behaviors regarding ADAS and<br \/>\nautonomous driving technologies.
