Actors might make them believable, but nothing makes a character iconic like a cool design. While there are plenty of memorable designs amongst the Star Wars<\/a><\/strong><\/em> greats, there hasn\u2019t been a villain as eye-catching as Darth Maul<\/a> since he first graced the screen in 1999. The Sith apprentice stands apart with his multicolored skin, vicious horns, unmatched grimace, and double-ended saber.<\/p>\n

Artist Iian McCaig<\/a> was just the first step in a long process of bringing the elusive character to life. His many concept sketches have fueled the creatives behind the series since 1999, including Darth Maul<\/a>\u2019s \u201coriginal face,\u201d which was so terrifying that George Lucas<\/a><\/strong> had to ask the artist to tone it down. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The process of creating characters for films is a multi-disciplined endeavor. Teams of artist work on limited prompts to provide a wide array of sketches for directors to look through and refine. According to long time Star Wars<\/em> artist, Lian McCaig, G<\/a>eorge Lucas was one of the best directors to work with.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t come in and tell you everything.\u201d He said during a promo for the Denver Art Museum\u2019s 2016 exhibit.<\/a> Instead, he would give them small pieces of information to go off of. Sometimes, he would give them even less. For the iconic black and red villain, all McCaig and company got was a simple, \u201cit\u2019s a new Sith lord, his name is Darth Maul.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lucas told the artist he wanted them to brainstorm what a Sith might look like. For a film set in a real-world location, artists look through reference books of cities, fashion, and military uniforms to understand how a design should look. Star Wars<\/em> can only be built around the history the films have already laid down. If there isn\u2019t anything related in the lore, all fresh material is used.<\/p>\n

According to StarWars.com<\/a><\/em>, the original script referred to Darth Maul as \u201ca vision from your worst nightmare.\u201d Enlisting the help of those around them, McCaig asked his colleagues to show him their idea of what this murderous person might look like. They delivered, one posed with circuit boards on his face, another arrived with ink blotted like tattoos across his cheeks.<\/p>\n

In the end, McCaig delivered his worst nightmare, something that will sound familiar to anyone who\u2019s seen The Acolyte,<\/em> or laid eyes on \u201cDarth Teeth<\/a>\u201d as fans have taken to calling the series\u2019 antagonist. He described it as, \u201ca lifeless face with glittering dead eyes and glistening metal teeth peering at me through the rain-streaked window\u201d \u00a0Those red braids were meant to signify the water running down the specter\u2019s face and across the glass. <\/p>\n

The image ended up being too creepy for what Lucas intended, and freaked him out so much he couldn\u2019t look at it for more than a few seconds. \u201cHe opened the folder, screamed, then slapped it closed and passed it back to me,\u201d McCaig recalls, \u201c\u2018Okay\u2019, he said, \u2018Give me your second worst nightmare.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The version the director settled on is as iconic as Jar Jar is despised \u2013 though the concept<\/a> was inevitably changed by the other artists in the film\u2019s workflow. In McCaig\u2019s mind, all those black lines on Maul\u2019s head were perfectly placed feathers \u2013like some sort of \u2018roided out Harpy Eagle<\/a>. And that iconic grimace was just a byproduct of the wire cutting into Maul\u2019s skin to keep them perfectly in place. It was make-up artist Nick Dudman<\/a>, who interpreted the designs as horns, and created a character Ray Park would go on to breathe life into.<\/p>\n

McCaig\u2019s original Sith designs have shown up in The Clone Wars<\/a> \u2013 <\/em>Mother Talzin bears a striking resemblance to that lovely<\/em> lady in the top right \u2013 and Ahsoka<\/a> <\/em>with the Nightsisters. The Witches of Dathomir<\/a> have shown up again and again in Dave Filoni<\/a>\u2019s Star Wars<\/em> projects, so it\u2019s easy to assume that The Acolyte <\/em>might be tapping into some of the old lore.<\/p>\n

Or maybe they\u2019re making something new. The Acolyte <\/em>showrunner Leslye Headland told Starwars.com<\/a><\/em> that the two workshopped the idea of Force witches who weren\u2019t connected to the Nightsisters of Dathomir, a \u201cnot all hot tubs are a jacuzzi\u201d sort of situation.<\/p>\n

In the end it\u2019s neat to see some of those ideas that never got picked up to be given new life. Chronically online Star Wars <\/em>fans tend to think of themselves as amateur historians, but they forget one major thing \u2013 As McCaig admits, \u201cThere is no history book for Star Wars<\/em>, the concept design department makes the history book\u2026 the other departments can come to and draw their inspiration from to make the reality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
