Remakes are hardly new, but Hollywood is increasingly impatient about cinematic do-overs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The recent \u201cMean Girls<\/a>\u201d updated the 2004 comedy, but at least it added musical numbers to the Burn Book formula.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Strangers: Part 1,\u201d now on Blu-ray<\/a>, reboots the 2008 sleeper film for a \u201cnew\u201d generation. This time, the sequels are baked into the title, but the new tale doesn\u2019t dramatically differ from the source material.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s like the upcoming \u201cAlien: Romulus\u201d sequel baldly stealing the original movie\u2019s tag line \u2013 \u201cIn Space, No One Can Hear You Scream.\u201d “Chapter 1” is generic but rarely dull, the kind of horror that holds you over until better, more imaginative fare arrives.<\/p>\n

Maya and Ryan (Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez) are celebrating their fifth anniversary \u2013 not of marriage, mind you \u2013 when their car breaks down in Microscopic Small Town USA.<\/p>\n

They get stares from the local, natch. They also suspect foul play when their new-ish car stops working. They make the best of it by renting a rustic cabin for the night.<\/p>\n

Heck, this might be a happy accident. Think again.<\/p>\n

Knock knock. <\/p>\n

\u201cIs Tamara there?\u201d asks a poorly lit stranger on the property\u2019s front porch. She\u2019s not, but the female stranger won\u2019t take that for an answer.<\/p>\n

The rest goes down as expected, with masked figures lurking about the property with bad intentions. One difference? Maya and Ryan are smitten kittens, and that sweetness gives depth to the horrors to come.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s impossible not to root for their survival.<\/p>\n

A sense of aching familiarity stains \u201cThe Strangers: Chapter 1.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least the tepid \u201cWrong Turn\u201d reboot<\/a> introduced radical new elements to the saga. This \u201cStrangers\u201d update traces the original with shocking fidelity. Heck, the creepy stranger at the door even asks for the same unseen person.<\/p>\n

Where IS that Tamara anyway? That\u2019s not an Easter Egg. It\u2019s just weak.<\/p>\n
