New chancellor Rachel Reeves puts \u00a31 billion worth of government transport projects under review<\/p>\n

The long-awaited Stonehenge Tunnel and Arundel Bypass have both been scrapped by new chancellor Rachel Reeves, as some \u00a31 billion of \u201cunfunded\u201d transport pledges due next year are also put on the chopping block.<\/p>\n

Delivering her maiden speech to the House of Commons, Reeves said transport secretary Louise Haigh would undertake a \u201cthorough review\u201d of these transport commitments which cover projects from roads to rail.<\/p>\n

On the two major A303 and A27 projects in particular, which were expected to cost \u00a31.7 billion and \u00a3455 million, Reeves said: \u201cThe previous government refused to cancel [them] despite knowing full well they were unaffordable”.<\/p>\n

She added: “If we cannot afford it, we cannot do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

No mention was made of the 14-mile Lower Thames Crossing, projected to cost \u00a39bn, which was also expected to be scrapped.<\/p>\n

The cuts were down to the new Labour government\u2019s claim that it inherited a budget projected overspend of \u00a322bn\u00a0and action was needed to \u201cmeet our own fiscal targets\u201d.<\/p>\n

Reeves said: “This is not the statement I wanted to give today, and these are not the decisions I wanted to make,\u00a0but they are the right decisions in difficult circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

As such, she promised that the Labour government\u2019s approach would go against that of the previous Conservative government, which \u201cmade a series of promises on transport\u201d without the ability to deliver them.<\/p>\n

This, Reeves<\/span> said, gave \u201cfalse hope\u201d to many with \u201cpromised roads that would never be built\u201d. Those projects that did go ahead were \u201cover budget and delayed and delayed\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will treat taxpayers\u2019 money with respect by ensuring that every pound is well spent and we will interrogate every line of public spending to ensure it represents value for money.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, the Department for Transport could have its spending throttled as part of a multi-year spending review. Stricter departmental budgets will be set for at least three years, Reeves told the Commons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The value of these will be announced during the Autumn Budget on 30 October, when they will also come into effect.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the most significant set of changes to our framework since the inception of the Office for Budget Responsibility,\u201d Reeves said.<\/p>\n

In response, RAC policy chief Simon Williams said the budget cuts have \u201ccreated more questions than answers\u201d about mending Britain\u2019s roads.<\/p>\n
