Over-the-air (OTA) software updates can improve an electric
\nvehicle's (EV) features and functionalities, but buggy software
\nrollout can have unintended consequences, including malfunction in
\ncritical vehicle systems; sometimes it could be life-threatening.
\nThe negative sentiment surrounding software issues can also dampen
\nconsumer enthusiasm for new electric vehicles' reliability and
\nsafety. This is why software development and management are
\noccupying centre stage in automakers' plans.<\/p>\n

Multiple original equipment manufacturers have delayed launch of
\nnew EVs due to issues related to software development. Volvo is one
\nof the latest to announce such issues. In June, the automaker recalled<\/strong><\/a> the EX30 electric small
\nsport utility vehicles (SUVs) owing to a software issue. The
\nsoftware update led to a multitude of problems, including
\nblacked-out infotainment screens and emergency braking system
\nrandomly activating.<\/p>\n

Subsequently in June 2024, Volvo informed customers that the
\nEX90, currently facing delays<\/strong><\/a>, may be delivered
\nwithout up to 10 key features<\/strong><\/a>. This includes four safety and
\nadvanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) features. Volvo said
\nthese features will be added later via an update.<\/p>\n

Getting its software right will be critical for Volvo to
\nmaintain the demand for its EVs. In January-July 2024, Volvo Cars reported<\/strong><\/a> a 62% year-on-year
\nincrease in sales of fully electric vehicles to 104,890 units.<\/p>\n

The software challenges largely originated from the adoption of
\na central computing system that Volvo lacked prior experience in
\ndeveloping. This system, heavily reliant on Nvidia processors, was
\nintended to transform the vehicle into a high-tech computer on
\nwheels, comparable to Tesla's offerings. However, the decision to
\nuse a central computing system led to significant debugging
\nchallenges, particularly as Volvo's engineering team was not
\ninitially equipped with the necessary expertise.<\/p>\n

E\/E backbone to run the software: Volvo's balancing
\nact<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Volvo initially aimed to deploy a zone architecture in 2022, but
\nthis was postponed to 2025. By 2025, Volvo planned to introduce the
\nGPA EV platform, where vehicle interface units (VIUs) would be
\ntransformed into zone controllers (ZCUs), thereby eliminating
\nmultiple ECUs. The company also intended to integrate the functions
\nof the body\/vehicle control unit (VCU) and the autonomy domain
\ncontroller into a centralized computer.<\/p>\n

However, Volvo is facing challenges with the implementation of
\nthis central computer, particularly concerning security issues when
\nintegrating ADAS and VCU into a single central computer. As a
\nresult, even if the company rolls out a central computer
\narchitecture, it might consider reverting to a domain controller
\nplus zone architecture in future offerings.<\/p>\n

Volvo's challenges reflect industry-wide software
\nstruggles<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Volvo is not the only automaker grappling with software-related
\nchallenges. Volkswagen faced similar issues with the launch of its
\nID.3 model in 2022, where initial production vehicles were delayed
\nowing to software glitches. Volkswagen's software subsidiary,
\nCariad, struggled to resolve these issues, resulting in persistent
\nproblems with slow and unreliable software for early customers. The
\nambitious E3 2.0 software platform, which was to unify the digital
\narchitecture across VW Group brands by 2026, is now being
\ncompletely reworked.<\/p>\n

This situation highlights the complex and costly nature of
\nintegrating cutting-edge software into modern vehicles, an issue
\nthat parallels Volvo's own challenges with its EX90 model. Both
\ncases illustrate the critical need for robust software development
\ncapabilities as traditional automakers navigate the digital
\ntransformation.<\/p>\n

In addition to software challenges, traditional OEMs face
\nsignificant performance disparities between their entry-level and
\npremium vehicle segments. Future computational capabilities and
\nmemory bandwidth in vehicles are projected to vary greatly,
\nnecessitating the development of adaptable and scalable E\/E
\narchitectures to efficiently manage these variations. Flexibility
\nand scalability in E\/E architecture will be crucial for maintaining
\ncompetitiveness across different market segments.<\/p>\n
