Nor did &#8220;Thelma&#8221; or &#8220;The Fabulous Four.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It Ends with Us,&#8221; however, scored a direct hit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/how-it-ends-with-us-became-summers-counter-programming-hit\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FjEqnklMkU74%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Video\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Blake Lively&#8217;s adaptation of the popular novel snared a staggering $50 million in its opening weekend. And it&#8217;s not slowing down.<\/p>\n<p>The film&#8217;s Tuesday haul? More than $7 million, enough to squeak by &#8220;Deadpool &amp; Wolverine&#8221; for the top spot, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Box Office Mojo.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How did a mid-sized drama, with no bankable stars (sorry, Ms. Lively) stand up to the summer&#8217;s biggest hits?<\/p>\n<p>AwardsDaily.com suggests<a href=\"https:\/\/www.awardsdaily.com\/2024\/08\/swiftie-power-driving-box-office-for-it-ends-with-us-to-50-mil\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"> Swiftie power<\/a> put the film over the top. The site says Lively&#8217;s girl-bond with Taylor Swift gave the film all the marketing momentum it needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">It\u2019s an unconventional way to boost box office but it\u2019s worth noting considering how films like this have struggled at the box office of late.<\/p>\n<p>That connection didn&#8217;t hurt. The movie&#8217;s core friction &#8211; Lively&#8217;s character is in an abusive relationship, connects with female movie goers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Said movie goers rarely get stories that speak directly to them. &#8220;Barbie&#8221; proved a pink and shiny exception, and we all know how that turned out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It Ends with Us&#8221; won&#8217;t be crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office, but it&#8217;s a sign that audiences are willing to shell out big bucks for movies without lycra-clad heroes or toy tie-ins.<\/p>\n<p>The summer movie began with a sense of finality. If &#8220;sure-fire&#8221; films like &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/fall-guy-review-gosling-blunt\/\">The Fall Guy<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/furiosa-review-anya-taylor-joy\/\">Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga<\/a>&#8221; could under-perform, maybe the theatrical model is doomed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/how-it-ends-with-us-became-summers-counter-programming-hit\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2F5gnaQFXD8YQ%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Video\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The aforementioned Disney smashes, plus &#8220;Despicable Me 4,&#8221; &#8220;Twisters&#8221; and &#8220;Bad Boys: Ride or Die&#8221; proved otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Now, &#8220;It Ends with Us&#8221; gives Hollywood a financial life line to a better tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest lesson? Every summer there&#8217;s one movie that defies all expectations. Last year, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/shock-sound-of-freedom-outgrossing-hollywoods-biggest-films\/\">Sound of Freedom<\/a>&#8221; earned that distinction. &#8220;It Ends with Us&#8221; is this year&#8217;s model.<\/p>\n<p>Why?
