Back-to-back poor defensive efforts out of the Olympic break, however, have raised new concerns about where the Storm truly rank as a unit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"MCCmEQ\">The Seattle Storm (17-10) are back in action after a month-long break in the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swishappeal.com\/\">WNBA<\/a> season, but not much has gone their way since they\u2019ve returned to the court. The Storm <a href=\"https:\/\/stats.wnba.com\/game\/1022400152\/\">blew a 14-point lead<\/a> to the Atlanta Dream last Friday, ultimately losing on a last-second shot by Tina Charles. Two days later, they gave up a <a href=\"https:\/\/stats.wnba.com\/game\/1022400160\/\">massive fourth quarter<\/a> to the Indiana Fever in what ended up being a lopsided loss.<\/p>\n<p id=\"s9QcrY\">It\u2019s just the third time this season Seattle has lost multiple games in a row. Both losses were lowlighted by second-half collapses and an uncharacteristic lack of intensity on defense; both Atlanta and Indiana scored over 50 second-half points against a typically stout Storm defense, something that Seattle head coach Noelle Quinn was quick to call out as unacceptable.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"e-image\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Seattle Storm v Atlanta Dream\" data-mask-text=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/thumbor\/UnQmko-kPG82EWCzB9MTa8ZeI8g=\/400x0\/filters:no_upscale()\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/25580011\/2166341752.jpg\"><br \/>\n      <cite>Photo by Adam Hagy\/NBAE via Getty Images<\/cite><figcaption>Dream center Tina Charles hit a last-second jumpshot over the Seattle Storm\u2019s Nneka Ogwumike to lift Atlanta to victory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"rUQpWx\">\u201cWe were on the road playing against a team that was very hungry,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pKgRdv8UZ-s\">Quinn told media<\/a> after her team\u2019s heartbreaking loss in Atlanta. \u201cWe can\u2019t allow ourselves to not be locked in on the defensive side of the basketball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"wQw5A0\">While Seattle\u2019s poor defensive effort was most noticeable when its opponents were hitting 3-point shots\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.circlingseattlesports.com\/articles\/irstorm-loss8182024\">Quinn bemoaned<\/a> a lack of physicality and overeager help defense against Indiana after the Fever hit 15 shots from long range\u2014the Storm did themselves no favor on the boards, either. Seattle was outrebounded 37-27 by Atlanta and 43-32 by Indiana, and while it hasn\u2019t necessarily been a weakness for the Storm in 2024, they now rank in the bottom third of the WNBA in <a href=\"https:\/\/stats.wnba.com\/teams\/advanced\/?sort=DREB_PCT&amp;dir=-1&amp;Season=2024&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;DateTo=08%2F19%2F2024\">defensive rebounding percentage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"9m7Z9V\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\" align=\"center\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We aren&#8217;t in that game w\/o Sky. <\/p>\n<p>Season-high 29 pts for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkyDigg4?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SkyDigg4<\/a> to go along with 5 assists and 3 steals. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TheNewStorm?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TheNewStorm<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uTog7IMnyI\">pic.twitter.com\/uTog7IMnyI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Seattle Storm (@seattlestorm) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/seattlestorm\/status\/1824628593068286264?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 17, 2024<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"qhwemh\">Perhaps most disappointingly is how the recent offensive efforts of the Storm\u2019s starting guards were overshadowed by the team\u2019s defensive deficiencies. Skylar Diggins-Smith and Jewell Loyd\u2014who, while both undeniably talented players, have at times struggled to play at their best simultaneously combined to score 50 points against the Dream. It was just the third time this season Diggins-Smith and Loyd scored at least 20 points apiece in the same game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bQMpyV\">For most of the season, Seattle has been able to lean on its defense as its top offensive players have learned to play with one another, hoping that chemistry would be built as time went on and that the team would be firing on all cylinders when the games mattered most. As the Storm start their post-Olympic break schedule lethargically, however, the opposite has occurred, with their usually reliable defense faltering as their dynamic scorers try their best to keep them in games. There\u2019s still plenty of basketball remaining in the 2024 regular season, but with the Storm now in fifth place in the standings, they\u2019ll need to reestablish their momentum quickly if
