The new cars rolling out of assembly lines today have more
\ntelematics features than five years ago. This is because automakers
\nglobally seek to generate new and recurring revenue streams by
\noffering subscription-based connected services in a range of
\nvehicles across all segments. The integration of telematics is
\nbecoming a standard feature in many new vehicles, reflecting its
\ngrowing importance.<\/p>\n

For automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) the
\nefficacy of these services will be one of the key constituents of
\nbuilding and maintaining brand perception and loyalty. According to
\nS&amp;P Global Mobility's 2024 Connected Car Consumer Survey<\/strong><\/a>, over 80%
\nof the respondents said they are either “very likely” or “likely”
\nto recommend their connected services brands.<\/p>\n

This vast potential of data monetization solutions throughout
\nthe lifecycle of a vehicle is driving OEMs to expand their
\ntelematics offerings. Some are deploying global platforms while
\nothers are pursuing regional strategies. This year General Motors
\nmade some popular features\u2014such as automatic crash response and
\nremote vehicle commands\u2014of OnStar, a subscription-based
\nservice, standard on all its US models, starting with the 2025 model year<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The expansion of connected services has had a positive impact on
\nthe vehicle telematics hardware and software industry. This year
\nsuppliers such as Harman, Qualcomm, Marelli, Ambarella and Octo
\nTelematics have unveiled new solutions for in-vehicle telematics
\napplications. Also, new patents have been granted to companies such
\nas Calamp Corp and Zonar Systems in areas such as crash determination<\/strong><\/a>, driver scoring<\/strong><\/a> and remote vehicle diagnosis<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

What will also contribute to growth of vehicle telematics is
\nincreasing focus of governments in various countries on deployment
\nof technologies that enable road safety. The United States took a
\nbig step in this direction last week by releasing a national deployment plan for vehicle-to-everything (V2X)
\ntechnologies<\/strong><\/a>. Commenting on the plan, U.S. Secretary
\nof Transportation Pete Buttigieg said, “The Department recognizes
\nthe potential safety benefits of V2X, and this plan will move us
\ncloser to nationwide adoption of this technology.”<\/p>\n

Adoption of hybrid telematics systems on the
\nrise<\/strong><\/h3>\n

S&amp;P Global Mobility forecasts global demand for automotive
\ntelematics systems to rise gradually from about 56 million units in
\n2023 to nearly 78 million units by 2029, at a compound annual
\ngrowth rate (CAGR) of about 6%. Embedded telematics control units
\n(TCUs) made up nearly 18% of the total telematics demand in 2023,
\nand this proportion will likely grow to nearly 21% by 2029. Hybrid
\ntelematics systems, which support both embedded TCUs and consumer
\nelectronics (CE) modules, hold the largest share of the overall
\nmarket.<\/p>\n

Hybrid telematic systems offer increased flexibility as they are
\ncapable of multiple connections across a variety of applications
\nand services. While particularly evident in the luxury segment,
\nadoption is expected to spread to other segments of the market,
\nalbeit at a pace below that of the overall market.<\/p>\n

While V2X connectivity has long been discussed as the ultimate
\nenabler of connected mobility ecosystems, its availability in light
\nvehicles remains very niche today with just over 1% of light
\nvehicles thus equipped. Moving forward, penetration will increase
\nmarkedly but will remain short of the near ubiquity that telematics
\nrepresent.<\/p>\n

Greater China is the largest telematics
\nmarket<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With Greater China further ahead in deployment of all things
\nCASE (connected, autonomous, sharing and electrification) related,
\nunsurprisingly the region is ahead of North America and Europe in
\nterms of telematics deployment in new light vehicles. The growth in
\nnew-energy vehicles will drive the telematics market in this
\nregion, as these systems are crucial in managing and monitoring EV
\nperformance, enhancing optimization and efficiency of the driving
\nexperience.<\/p>\n

Vehicular telematics system growth is the result of a
\nnear-perfect storm of market, technological and regulatory forces
\ncombining to provide a benevolent environment for growth. With
\nthose forces including the aforementioned CASE, OEMs wanting to
\nbolster alternative revenue streams, growing demand for usage-based
\ninsurance, and rapid technological advancement (6G connectivity
\narrives this decade) unlikely to subside any time soon, the
\nlong-term future for telematics and V2X seems assured.<\/p>\n
