On a volume estimate of 1.42 million units, US light vehicle
\nsales in August are expected to be up more than 7% year over year
\nand grow more than 11% from the month-prior level. This translates
\nto a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 15.2 million units,
\na moderate reading in a market continuing to wait for sales levels
\nto advance more strongly.<\/p>\n

“New vehicle affordability remains the biggest obstacle
\npreventing further advances in the pace of auto sales,” said
\nChris Hopson<\/a>, principal analyst at S&amp;P Global Mobility.
\n“The current environment of still-high interest rates and
\nslow-to-recede vehicle prices are translating to still-high monthly
\npayments and little progress for new vehicle demand levels.”<\/p>\n

Continued advances in inventories and incentives are expected
\nover the remainder of the year\u2014two levers necessary for
\naffordability issues to ease and sales to progress. But recent
\ndevelopments reflect some volatility for both metrics.<\/p>\n

According to
\nMatt Trommer<\/a>, associate director, S&amp;P Global Mobility,
\n“Analysis of
\nJuly retail advertised inventory data<\/a> in the US finds that
\ninventory declined compared to month-end June reporting, the first
\nmonth-over-month drop since May 2023. Available retail advertised
\ninventory at the end of July was up 52.5% compared to last year,
\nbut down 2.3% from June 2024.”<\/p>\n

Strong development of battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales
\nremains an assumption in the longer term S&amp;P Global Mobility
\nlight vehicle sales forecast. In the immediate term, moderate
\nmonth-to-month volatility is anticipated. August BEV share is
\nexpected to reach 8.1%, similar to the month-prior reading and
\ncontinued advancement from the Q1 2024 results.<\/p>\n

BEV share is expected to progress over the next several months,
\ncontinuing the upward trend realized since April 2024, assisted by
\nthe roll outs of vehicles such as the Chevrolet Equinox EV and
\nHonda Prologue, followed by new BEVs such as the Jeep Wagoneer S
\nand Volkswagen ID. Buzz slated for release in the second half of
\n2024.<\/p>\n
