A2, Pod, and a motley crew of determined ML soldiers fight bravely side-by-side, and are able to buy enough time for Pascal to roll in with a minigun and dual missile launchers to devastate the leaderless army of hostiles. In the midst of battle A2 pauses to consider that she’s protecting\u00a0Machine Lifeforms<\/em>, whom she’s sworn to destroy for years. Now she treats them as her comrades; her\u00a0family.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

When the last of the hostiles are defeated, A2 joins the good MLs in celebration, and even laughs for probably the first time in years. But as this is\u00a0NieR: Automata<\/em>, the mirth doesn’t last long, as another squad of MLs rains down death from above, carpet bombing\u00a0 and decimating the village Pascal and his pacifist group worked so hard to cultivate.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A2 could’ve considered that the hostile MLs were targeting\u00a0her<\/em>, and that her presence in the village was the reason they came at all. But that isn’t a certainty, and in any case, it’s not\u00a0obligation<\/em> that causes A2 to fight to protect the pacifists.<\/p>\n

No, it’s the fact that, just as Lily and Pascal hoped, she grew to care<\/em> about the village and its inhabitants. Even when Pascal loses all hope, A2 spots some ML children survivors. Pascal takes them all aboard his flight unit and A2 covers their escape, eager to pay the hostiles back for their crimes.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

After basking in the sweet smell of victory and the rank stench of defeat in short order alongside A2, we check in on 9S as he approaches the second sub-unit in a sandy desert. His Pod warns him he’s in bad shape and should probably reboot and rest, but he trudges on, driven by revenge. Meanwhile, when A2’s Pod detects a Goliath approaching the Resistance Camp (where Pascal and the kids went), she races to meet the hulking machine one-on-one.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As Nines hacks into the sub-unit and enters a vast archive of research and intelligence on androids and YoRHa, A2 has Pod unlock her B (-for-Berserker) Mode, which enables her to block a swinging strike from a Goliath. I don’t have to tell you, this is extremely badass. That said, A2 herself is pretty gassed from the earlier battles, and soon finds herself on the ropes against the behemoth.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

That’s when her empathy for the children is repaid by Pascal, who arrives in a commandeered Goliath-class of his own and delivers a flying kick to the one that was about to finish off A2. Now she knows that not only does she want to protect MLs who merely want to live lives of peace, but they in turn will protect her when she’s up against the wall.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Nines receives no such enlightening education. Rejecting research that indicates that both androids and MLs are fundamentally the same (as a matter of coding), he reaches the sub-unit core and prepares to destory it, but is reverse-hacked. He’s presented with\u2014or mocked by, you could say\u2014an avatar of 2B and surrounded by memories of her, only for them to break down one by one and leave him with nothing.<\/p>\n

He takes his despair and rage out on a pixelated figure that soon coalesces into 2B, and Nines is so messed up he doesn’t realize he’s repeatedly stabbing her. However, he’s still able to destroy the sub-unit core, unlocking the second passcode: “YOUR CURSE.”\u00a0<\/em>The previous core pled for mercy in a child’s voice, while this core used Nines’ memories of his beloved 2B to try to keep him from destroying it. It didn’t work, and now there’s only one sub-unit left before he can access the main tower.<\/p>\n
