You may be enjoying your connected vehicle features, but are you
\nfully aware of what data you're sharing and how it's being used?
\nNot all customers are, which is why US policymakers plan to bolster
\nregulation in this area.<\/p>\n

As the mobility industry scrambles to monetize connected vehicle
\ndata opportunities, mainly driven by the expansion of
\nsoftware-as-a-service and mobility-as-a-service business models,
\ncustomer data privacy and protection are being put on the line.
\nAutomakers are increasingly accused of resorting to deceptive or
\nunethical workarounds to obtain vehicle data and of ignoring
\nconsumers' best interests.<\/p>\n

In July, two US senators asked the Federal Trade Commission
\n(FTC) to investigate automakers<\/strong><\/a> for sharing customer
\ndata, saying they did so without explicit permission in an
\n“outrageous manipulation” of consumers and a “flagrant abuse” of
\nprivacy. The senators said that General Motors, Honda and Hyundai
\nmay have unlawfully shared consumer data with data broker Verisk by
\neither obscuring customer participation in data sharing or
\nobtaining consent by misleading means. Verisk then allegedly sold
\nreports on driver behavior to insurance companies, which raised
\npremiums accordingly.<\/p>\n

More recently, Texas' attorney general
\nsued General Motors<\/strong><\/a>, alleging it illegally collected
\nand sold drivers' data without their consent or knowledge to
\ninsurance companies. In car models from 2015 and later, the
\nautomaker allegedly used technology to “collect, record, analyze,
\nand transmit highly detailed driving data.”<\/p>\n

The data monetization bubble<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A typical connected vehicle can generate nearly 25 GB of data
\nper hour and collect information from more than 100 data points,
\nthanks to embedded features such as geolocation and navigation,
\ncompanion apps, biometrics, voice recognition, on-board diagnostics
\nand driver assistance. There is money to be made from infotainment
\nand advanced driver assistance systems packages, feature upgrades
\nand enhancements, service unlocks, advanced safety or navigation
\nfeatures, and various other means.<\/p>\n

That said, the industry is slowly waking up to the fact that the
\nmonetization potential of connected vehicle data has been overhyped
\nand that a massive portion of this potential is derivative or
\nindirect. According to S&amp;P Global Mobility, the annual revenue
\ngenerated by connected services and paid updates amounts to about
\n$6 billion, while projections put revenue at about $200 billion for
\nsoftware, services and data in 2030.<\/p>\n

The recent collapse of big data aggregators such as Wejo and
\nOtonomo was a reality check for the industry and sobered the lofty
\nmonetization projections issued just half a decade ago. The
\nindustry is learning the hard way that it's not only difficult to
\nextract value from car data, but it may also be illegal and have
\nlingering ramifications if done without proper consumer
\nconsent.<\/p>\n

In the US, legislation such as the American Data Privacy and
\nProtection Act ensures organizations obtain clear user consent for
\ndata processing for services offered through “non-traditional
\ndevices such as cars.” However, as AI capabilities grow,
\nregulations may need to be updated to address new challenges, such
\nas the use of synthetic data or the potential for AI to infer
\nsensitive or personally identifiable information from seemingly
\ninnocuous data points.<\/p>\n

In this regard, new draft bipartisan legislation the American Privacy Rights
\nAct<\/strong><\/a> was unveiled to establish a national data privacy
\nand security standard that gives people the right to control where
\ntheir personal information goes and who can sell it.<\/p>\n

Tread with caution!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

By 2030, automakers plan to generate billions of dollars through
\nsoftware services and subscription models. With tightening
\nregulations, this revenue projection depends heavily on strict
\nimplementation of data privacy and protection standards at
\nautomakers. One of the primary challenges is ensuring transparency
\nin data collection and usage. Although most automakers provide
\noptions to opt out of unnecessary data sharing, these settings are
\noften buried within complex menus.<\/p>\n

Empowering customers needs to be a core strategy in automakers'
\ndata monetization plans. S&amp;P Global Mobility's 2024 Connected Car Consumer
\nSurvey<\/strong><\/a> revealed that 8% of the nearly 8,000
\nrespondents were not interested in sharing vehicle data, even for
\nfree services. A majority of these respondents (nearly 70%) said
\nissues around data security and misuse were the two most important
\nreasons why they were not comfortable sharing data.<\/p>\n

The accusations against General Motors, Honda and Hyundai come
\nat a time when insurance costs in the US are soaring, with car
\ncoverage jumping 19% in July compared with a year earlier. With US
\nlegislators getting more collaborative on data security and
\nprivacy, automakers that demonstrate robust data protection
\nmeasures are likely to gain a competitive advantage. As in any
\nbusiness endeavor, building and maintaining consumer trust is
\nfundamental.<\/p>\n
