Software-defined vehicles (SDVs) use software to control
\noperations, add new features and integrate innovative
\nfunctionalities. While this software-centric approach enhances
\nflexibility and accelerates innovation, it also introduces
\nchallenges such as cybersecurity risks, complex software management
\nand hardware obsolescence.<\/p>\n

Throughout this year, and on an ongoing basis 4, S&amp;P Global
\nMobility engaged with key players in the SDV landscape, including
\nRed Hat, Elektrobit, Valeo China, KPIT Technologies and Iflytek.
\nTheir insights revealed a dynamic market poised for transformative
\ninnovations, positioning SDVs as a cornerstone of future automotive
\ntechnology.<\/p>\n

“The arrival of SDVs is happening both very slowly and all at
\nonce,” observed Francis Chow, Red Hat's vice president and general
\nmanager of in-vehicle operating system and edge. “Consumers \u2026 will
\nexpect to see these features in their next vehicle purchase.” This
\nshift compels a reevaluation of traditional design and development
\nparadigms. Moritz Neukirchner, Elektrobit's senior director of
\nstrategic product management for SDV, emphasized that “it's all
\nabout software innovations and accelerating time to market.”
\nManaging software from diverse sources while ensuring cybersecurity
\ncompliance is critical. “Setting up strong security measures and
\nfollowing regulations are crucial for SDVs to reach their full
\npotential,” Chow said.<\/p>\n

The allure of SDVs lies in their ability to offer advanced
\nfunctionalities. Features such as AI-driven object detection,
\nenhanced infotainment systems and predictive maintenance are
\ngaining traction. “The promise of a vehicle that can improve over
\ntime \u2026 is one of the most appealing elements of the SDV,”
\nNeukirchner stated.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, vehicle software development followed a linear
\nmodel confined to initial production phases. The SDV model promotes
\ncontinuous integration and iterative updates, compelling original
\nequipment manufacturers to create robust software development
\nenvironments capable of managing frequent updates while maintaining
\nsafety and performance standards.<\/p>\n

Open-source principles are pivotal in this transition. By
\nleveraging platforms such as Linux, automakers can foster
\ncollaboration and expedite development. “Open source provides a
\nmeans to an end for the automotive industry,” Chow said,
\nhighlighting how this collaborative approach reduces costs and
\naccelerates the delivery of innovative applications amid rising
\npressures to deliver new features swiftly.<\/p>\n

An architectural shift from domain-based to centralized
\nelectronic control units (ECUs) is needed for the evolution of
\nSDVs. Jianmin Gu, chief technology officer at Valeo China,
\nexplained that centralized ECUs optimize resource utilization and
\nsimplify the vehicle's overall architecture.<\/p>\n

However, the increasing interconnectivity of SDVs amplifies
\nrisks associated with cybersecurity and software failures. The
\nindustry is responding with stringent cybersecurity measures and
\nadherence to rigorous safety standards. ” KPIT is a member of the
\nAUTOSAR Consortium, the SOAFEE Special Interest Group, and other
\ncollaborative efforts aimed at standardizing the industry and
\nmaking it safer,” KPIT Technologies said.<\/p>\n

The future of SDVs is promising yet complex. Advances in
\nartificial intelligence and machine learning are expected to
\nenhance vehicle autonomy and user-centricity. The various
\napplications of large language models “contribute to an improved
\nuser experience in cars,” noted Lei Qin Hui, chief technology
\nofficer of Iflytek Intelligent Auto. “The combination of technology
\nand human interaction creates a holistic experience for car
\nusers.”The economic implications of SDVs are significant, opening
\ndoors to new revenue streams for manufacturers through
\nsubscription-based services for software updates and in-vehicle
\napplications. This model mirrors trends in the software industry,
\nwhere continuous delivery and service-based revenue are becoming
\nthe norm. “Automakers are beginning to understand that a
\nsignificant portion of the software stack is not differentiating,”
\nChow explained. “So much time and precious engineering resources
\nare wasted reinventing nondifferentiating software.” This awareness
\nis prompting manufacturers to rethink their business models and
\nfocus on genuinely unique features.<\/p>\n

For automakers, this transition is not just about keeping pace;
\nit's an opportunity to redefine the driving experience and create a
\nconnected, intelligent and user-centric future.<\/p>\n
