Resulting impacts to vehicle demand will be significant,<br \/>\nespecially interest rates, trade flows, sourcing, and BEV adoption<br \/>\nrates.<\/em><\/p>\n<p >Global new vehicle sales in 2025 are expected to rise 1.7%<br \/>\nyear-over-year, to 89.6 million units, according to a new forecast<br \/>\nby S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility.<\/p>\n<p >The global auto sector remains focused on managing production<br \/>\nand inventory levels in response to regional demand patterns, which<br \/>\ninclude slower growth in key markets, in some cases related to<br \/>\nslower electric vehicle adoption rates.<\/p>\n<p >The forecast outlook incorporates several factors, including<br \/>\nimproved supply, tariff impacts, still-high interest rates,<br \/>\naffordability challenges, elevated new vehicle prices, uneven<br \/>\nconsumer confidence, energy price and supply concerns, risks in<br \/>\nauto lending and the challenges of electrification. In the US,<br \/>\npresident-elect Donald Trump is expected to hit the ground running<br \/>\nin 2025 with a range of policy priorities, including universal<br \/>\ntariffs, deregulation, and wavering BEV support.<\/p>\n<p >&#8220;2025 is shaping up to be ultra-challenging for the auto<br \/>\nindustry, as key regional demand factors limit demand potential and<br \/>\nthe new US administration adds fresh uncertainty from day one,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/en\/research-insights\/experts\/couchman-colin\"><br \/>\nColin Couchman<\/a>, executive director of global light vehicle<br \/>\nforecasting for S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility. &#8220;A key concern is how<br \/>\n&#39;natural&#39; EV demand fares as governments rethink policy support,<br \/>\nespecially incentives and subsidies, industrial policy, tariffs,<br \/>\nand fast evolving OEM target setting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p >2024 global vehicle sales are expected to reach 88.2 million<br \/>\nunits, according to S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility. This reflects a 1.7%<br \/>\nincrease from 2023, supported by ongoing inventory restocking<br \/>\nthroughout the year as supply chains become more stable.<\/p>\n<h2 ><strong>Market-by-market vehicle sales forecasts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p ><strong>Europe:<\/strong> Wrapping up 2024, the Western\/Central<br \/>\nEuropean market should deliver just under 15.0 million units (+1.1%<br \/>\ny\/y), as customers remain cautious, and OEMs continue to fine-tune<br \/>\ntheir propulsion mix. Into 2025, this storyline will intensify as<br \/>\nstrict 2025 emission rules further influence the market mix and<br \/>\ntopline, S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility forecasts the market flatlining<br \/>\naround 15 million units, up by just 0.1% y\/y &#8211; reflecting economic<br \/>\nrecession risks, still-high car prices, tapering EV subsidies, EV<br \/>\ntariffs, and political uncertainty in Germany and France.<\/p>\n<p >&#8220;Key challenges include the dynamic electrification storyline,<br \/>\nalongside EU tariffs on mainland Chinese imports, Trump tariff<br \/>\nrisks, hesitant consumers, a new EU Commission, and vigorous<br \/>\nlobbying regarding EU emission targets,&#8221; Couchman said.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>United States:<\/strong> S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility projects<br \/>\nUS sales volumes to reach 16.2 million units in 2025, an estimated<br \/>\nincrease of 1.2% from the projected 2024 level of 16.0 million<br \/>\nunits and reflective of a still uncertain environment for auto<br \/>\nsales levels.<\/p>\n<p >&#8220;2025 brings with it mixed opportunities and uncertainty for the<br \/>\nauto industry as a new administration and policy proposals take<br \/>\nhold,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/en\/research-insights\/experts\/hopson-chris\"><br \/>\nChris Hopson<\/a>, manager of North American light vehicle sales<br \/>\nforecasting for S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility.<\/p>\n<p >&#8220;New vehicle affordability issues that coalesced to constrain<br \/>\nauto demand levels for much of 2024 will not be resolved quickly in<br \/>\n2025. Vehicle pricing levels are expected to decline but remain<br \/>\nhigh; interest rates are expected to shift further downwards, but<br \/>\ninflation levels are anticipated to remain sticky, and new vehicle<br \/>\ninventory should also progress, but careful management is expected<br \/>\ntoo. Combined with an uneasy consumer, we project this translates<br \/>\nto mild growth prospects for auto sales.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Mainland China:<\/strong> For the year ending, the<br \/>\ncombination of the CNY130 billion extension of New Energy Vehicle<br \/>\n(NEV) incentives, together with the new CNY75 billion trade-in<br \/>\nscheme, 2024 is estimated to recover to at least 25.8 million units<br \/>\n(+1.4% y\/y), according to S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility. For 2025,<br \/>\ndespite below par economic activity, the automotive sector will<br \/>\ncontinue to be supported by the NEV and trade-in schemes, along<br \/>\nwith local government auto incentives, wider government stimulus,<br \/>\nand the continuation of the vehicle price wars. 2025 demand for<br \/>\nMainland China is forecasted at 26.6 million units, up a further<br \/>\n3.0% over 2024 levels.<\/p>\n<p >The NEV boom is likely to extend into 2025 with electrified<br \/>\nvehicle prices benefitting from cheaper battery costs together with<br \/>\ngenerous national and regional subsidy programs to help stimulate<br \/>\nnew vehicle demand. Coupled with full NEV tax exemption through to<br \/>\nthe end of 2025, NEV penetration (as % of passenger vehicles) is<br \/>\nprojected to further increase to 58% in 2025, from 49% in 2024,<br \/>\naccording to S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility estimates.<\/p>\n<p ><strong>Japan:<\/strong> Looking to 2025, Japanese light vehicle<br \/>\ndemand should be back in growth mode following a disappointing<br \/>\n2024, largely reflecting Daihatsu&#39;s unexpected halt in shipments<br \/>\ndue to emissions irregularities. S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility projects<br \/>\nsales volumes to reach 4.6 million units in 2025, an estimated<br \/>\nincrease of 5.4% from the projected 2024 level below 4.4 million<br \/>\nunits. The prospect of US universal tariffs, and weaker global<br \/>\neconomic fundamentals, could prove problematic for Japan\u2014a key<br \/>\nnet exporter of automobiles, especially to North America, although<br \/>\nexpected slower US BEV growth could offer a silver lining.<\/p>\n<h2 ><strong>2025 vehicle production outlook stagnates as global<br \/>\nrisks intensify<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p >Global light vehicle production in 2024 is expected to finish at<br \/>\n89.1 million units &#8211; a 1.6% deterioration compared to 2023 levels,<br \/>\nwith all regions except mainland China and South America<br \/>\nexperiencing decline.<\/p>\n<p >The production outlook for 2025 is dominated by the assumption<br \/>\nthat the incoming US administration will levy a new wide-reaching<br \/>\ntariff regime, effectively creating a universal tariff of 10% on<br \/>\nall goods coming into the US except for Canada and Mexico where the<br \/>\nterms of the USMCA are assumed and mainland China where it is<br \/>\nassumed a tariff of 30% will be applied.<\/p>\n<p >For 2025, S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility forecasts global light vehicle<br \/>\nproduction levels to decline by 0.4%, to 88.7 million units. The<br \/>\ntariff effects are difficult to isolate in each region especially<br \/>\nconsidering the ongoing challenges of inventory management, and<br \/>\nwith continued volatility at the vehicle program level as OEMs make<br \/>\nstrategic adjustments to their future product plans.<\/p>\n<p >&#8220;The auto industry continues to navigate uncertain terrain as we<br \/>\nenter 2025, particularly as we anticipate President-elect Trump&#39;s<br \/>\nincoming universal tariffs,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/en\/research-insights\/experts\/fulthorpe-mark\"><br \/>\nMark Fulthorpe<\/a>, executive director of global light vehicle<br \/>\nforecasting for S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility. &#8220;During 2025, the<br \/>\nproduction landscape will change dramatically, as global trade<br \/>\nslows, and as retaliatory measures are likely to emerge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p >In mainland China, S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility forecasts stable<br \/>\nproduction levels for 2025, up 0.1%, at 29.6 million units. Output<br \/>\nlevels should be supported by a combination of heady NEV domestic<br \/>\ndemand, alongside robust exports, albeit tempered by EU import<br \/>\ntariffs on Chinese-made BEVs.<\/p>\n<p >For the North American region, overall 2025 production is set to<br \/>\nfall back by 2.4%, to 15.1 million units. The incoming Trump<br \/>\nadministration will mark a return to the predictably unpredictable<br \/>\nwith policies that are expected to influence overall demand and<br \/>\nchallenge vehicle mix assumptions. On a brighter note, deregulation<br \/>\nshould create tailwinds for the North American auto industry later<br \/>\nin President Trump&#39;s second term.<\/p>\n<p >Europe is expected to build 16.6 million units in 2025, down<br \/>\n2.6% from an estimated 17.0 million in 2024. The outlook reflects<br \/>\npropulsion mix fine tuning ready for the 2025 step change in EU<br \/>\nemissions rules, alongside new tariff\/trade assumptions associated<br \/>\nwith the incoming Trump administration, with premium vehicles<br \/>\nparticularly at risk.<\/p>\n<h2 ><strong>Consumer uncertainty around electrification, especially<br \/>\nspeed bumps in Europe &amp;amp; US<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p >Through 2024, a host of OEMs have been walking back ambitious<br \/>\nelectrification plans for the coming five to 15 years. A key<br \/>\nconcern is how &#8220;natural&#8221; EV demand fares, as governments fine-tune<br \/>\npolicy support, especially incentives and subsidies, EV industrial<br \/>\npolicy, and tariffs. Outside China, automakers face twin challenges<br \/>\nin the electrification transition\u2014scaling output of sellable<br \/>\nBEVs and finding willing customers to buy them.<\/p>\n<p >Despite the gloom, electric vehicles remain an important<br \/>\nautomotive growth sector, and S&amp;amp;P Global Mobility projects<br \/>\nglobal sales for battery electric passenger vehicles to post 15.1<br \/>\nmillion units for 2025, up by 30% compared to 2024 levels,<br \/>\naccounting for an estimated 16.7% of global light vehicle sales.<br \/>\nFor reference, 2024 posted an estimated 11.6 million BEVs globally,<br \/>\nfor 13.2% market share.<\/p>\n<p >Major markets are forecast for most of this volume, though<br \/>\nsmaller markets will also see modest increases.
