Our score:\u00a0 5 out of 5<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n If I just wrote the superlatives that have been used to describe the music of Bob Dylan for the past five decades this review would be 1,000 words long.\u00a0\u00a0So let me just throw out a few.\u00a0\u00a0Genius.\u00a0\u00a0America\u2019s troubadour.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>And, my favorite, the greatest artist, in any medium, of all time<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0With multiple Grammy awards, an Oscar and, oh yeah, both a Pulitzer and Nobel Prize, there isn\u2019t much he hasn\u2019t done.\u00a0\u00a0But how did young Robert Zimmerman from Hibbings, Minnesota, become Bob Dylan?\u00a0\u00a0\u201cA Complete Unknown\u201d fills in the blanks.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n New York City.\u00a0\u00a01961.\u00a0\u00a0A young man wanders the streets of Greenwich Village, intent to visit his idol, the great folk musician Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy) who is currently in the hospital.\u00a0\u00a0He finagles his way to Guthrie\u2019s room, where he also meets another of his heroes, Pete Seeger (Norton).\u00a0\u00a0With the support of these two men, the world will soon meet, as Joan Baez called him, \u201cthe unwashed phenomenon, the original vagabond.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Say hello to Bob Dylan.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It has to be extremely difficult to make a film about a performer that the entire world knows.\u00a0\u00a0Rami Malek in \u201cBohemian Rhapsody,\u201d Jamie Foxx in \u201cRay\u201d and both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon in \u201cWalk the Line\u201d \u2013 also brilliantly directed by James Mangold \u2013 hit all of the right notes with both fans and critics.\u00a0\u00a0As quite possibly the best film of the year, \u201cA Complete Unknown\u201d most definitely deserves a slot on that short list.<\/p>\n The film\u2019s casting is spot on.\u00a0\u00a0Chalamet, who not only embodies Dylan in speech patterns and mannerisms but does his own singing, channels the rebellious energy that made Dylan a folk hero.\u00a0\u00a0As I told the studio rep after the screening, \u201cgive that kid the Oscar now.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0And Chalamet is surrounded by an amazing cast, led by Norton.\u00a0\u00a0When we first meet Pete Seeger he is fighting for his freedom in court, having to address the backlash from his song, \u201cThis Land is Your Land.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Fanning stars as Sylvie Russo, Bob\u2019s on and off again girlfriend based, I\u2019m sure, on Dylan\u2019s friend Suze Rotello, who is featured with Dylan on the cover of his album \u201cThe Freewheelin\u2019 Bob Dylan.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0We are also introduced to other great musicians of the era, including a performer my high school Spanish teacher, Mr. Guggino, used to refer to as JO-ANN BAZE,\u00a0\u00a0Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) and Johnny Cash (Boyd Holbrook).\u00a0\u00a0All of the actors do amazing work, especially capturing the vocal qualities that made their characters stars.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Mangold\u2019s direction is straight ahead and on point, and there isn\u2019t a wasted frame of film on screen.\u00a0\u00a0But it\u2019s the music that fans will be going for, and they will not be disappointed.\u00a0\u00a0With so many great songs over fifty years, it\u2019s had to remember all of the songs Dylan wrote that either he performed or that he gave to others.\u00a0\u00a0But they were ahead of their time then and remain beloved now.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n On a scale of zero to five, I give \u201cA Complete Unknown\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>\u2605<\/strong>\u2605<\/strong>\u2605\u2605\u2605<\/strong><\/p>\n
