Here are a few examples of his scream success stories (US box office):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/what-hollywood-can-learn-from-m3gan\/\"><strong>M3GAN<\/strong><\/a>\u201d &#8211; $95 million<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Get Out<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; $176 million<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>The Invisible Man<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; $70 million<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>The Black Phone<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; $90 million<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Halloween<\/strong>\u201d (2018) &#8211; $159 million<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Happy Death Day<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; $55 million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blum didn\u2019t heed his own advice when he signed on to co-produce an update on the granddaddy of all horror movies \u2013 1973\u2019s \u201cThe Exorcist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s considered one of the scariest movies of all time, and Universal Pictures figured it could leverage that brand into a franchise for the modern era, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/26\/business\/exorcist-new-trilogy.htm\"  rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\">paying $400 million two years ago<\/a> for the privilege.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sequels! Streaming originals! Theme park attractions!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blumhouse Pictures, according to The New York Times, \u201chas a first-look deal with Universal\u201d and served as a natural partner given its mostly successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/halloween-2018-review\/\">\u201cHalloween\u201d reboot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mega studio, along with the guru of small-budget horror, joined forces. Both parties envisioned a solid ROI, both in theatrical sales and streaming views.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good luck now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Exorcist: Believer\u201d opened to putrid reviews and a <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/10\/box-office-the-exorcist-believer-1235565802\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">lackluster $27 million on its opening weekend<\/a> during the month of Halloween, no less. Audiences hated the film, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/the_exorcist_believer\"  rel=\"noopener\">Consumers gave it a tepid 57 percent \u201crotten\u201d rating<\/a> at RottenTomatoes.com to go with a \u201cC\u201d from CinemaScore.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not going to spark a word-of-mouth rebound.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the powers that be kept the reboot&#8217;s price tag at a modest $30 million, a smart decision but one undermined by that $400 million fee.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ExorcistBeliever?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ExorcistBeliever<\/a> is a $30 million film that opened w\/ $27 million. However, they (foolishly) promised a trilogy and paid $400 million for rights. How about \u2026 everything?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start with what should be the obvious problem with the concept. No \u201cExorcist\u201d film has thrived at the box office since the 1973 original.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Exorcist II: The Heretic<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; $30 million<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>The Exorcist III<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; $26 million<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Exorcist: The Beginning<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; $41 million<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<strong>Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist<\/strong>\u201d &#8211; $251,495<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shouldn\u2019t that give any film executive pause?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original \u201cExorcist\u201d captured lightning in a bottle, arriving at a time when cultural pieties were easily rattled. That\u2019s hardly true today. In fact, the new \u201cBeliever\u201d falls squarely in line with woke platitudes, eschewing Catholic dogma for what <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThatChrisGore?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\"  rel=\"noopener\">Film Threat\u2019s Chris Gore<\/a> dubbed an \u201cAvengers\u201d approach to the world\u2019s religions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/exorcist-believer-box-office-blumhouse\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-youtube-lyte\/lyteCache.php?origThumbUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2FGg4kq0EyzSQ%2Fhqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Video\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even liberal film critics found that all-inclusive rebranding a dud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal\/Blumhouse now has a monumental task at hand.
