The patient, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/tag\/John-Michael-Murdoch\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Michael Murdoch<\/a><\/strong>, has since died from cancer.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/health\/2025\/01\/ohsu-patients-face-catches-fire-after-surgical-staff-swabbed-his-skin-with-alcohol-900000-lawsuit-says.html\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Oregonian<\/a><\/em>, Murdoch&#8217;s 2022 surgery was to perform a tracheostomy to create a hole for a breathing tube in Murdoch&#8217;s throat. Murdoch was <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/celebrities\/kate-middleton-makes-surprise-return-to-cancer-treatment-hospital-for-an-emotional-reason-in-unannounced-royal-visit\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">undergoing treatment for cancer<\/a> of the tongue at that time. Murdoch, then 51, succumbed to the cancer about six months after the botched procedure. The lawsuit Toni Murdoch, John Michael&#8217;s wife, filed, however, says the alcohol was not given sufficient time to dry, and a flame ignited on Murdoch&#8217;s face when a tool used in the surgery caused a spark.<\/p>\n<p>Murdoch&#8217;s lawsuit alleges that the tool used in the procedure was known to spark and shouldn&#8217;t have been used. And, according to litigation, the oxygen, alcohol, and the spark created a &#8220;fire triangle,&#8221; or the perfect conditions for the flame. &#8220;It never should have happened,\u201d the Murdoch family lawyer Ron Cheng said.<\/p>\n<p>As shocking and strange as the Murdoch case may seem, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facs.org\/for-medical-professionals\/news-publications\/news-and-articles\/bulletin\/2024\/january-2024-volume-109-issue-1\/new-sentinel-event-alert-updates-guidance-on-preventing-surgical-fires\/#:~:text=Surgical%20fires%20continue%20to%20occur,occur%20annually%20in%20the%20US.\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American College of Surgeons<\/a> says <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/true-crime\/texas-urologist-accused-of-using-nose-candy-before-operating-on-male-patients\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">operating rooms <\/a>have the perfect conditions for fire, with oxygen, fuel, and ignition sources contributing factors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0039606022008844\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Emergency Care Research Institute<\/a> says as many as 100 surgical fires happen each year.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3954149\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>NIH<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;Surgical fires are a rare but serious preventable safety risk in modern hospitals. Data from the US show that up to 650 surgical fires occur each year, with up to 5% causing death or serious harm,&#8221; and studies have been conducted on whether the use of &#8220;spirit-based surgical skin preparation fluid&#8221; \u2014 such as isopropyl alcohol \u2014 should be reduced because of fire risk.<\/p>\n<p>In November last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/litigation\/does-thing-speak-itself-surgical-fires-res-ipsa-loquitur-2024-11-21\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Reuters<\/em><\/a> reported that surgical fire cases such as the Murdoch suit are easier to prove than other types of medical malpractice because the fire itself could destroy proof that the healthcare providers were guilty of &#8220;breach of care,&#8221; or that the fire itself sufficiently proves negligence on its own.<\/p>\n<p>Also last year, Jennifer Conroy, MSN, RN-BSN, CNOR, recalled her experience with a surgical fire, writing for the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aorn.org\/article\/the-importance-of-the-fire-risk-assessment\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>AORN<\/em><\/a>). Details of Conroy&#8217;s case are similar to what Murdoch&#8217;s family describes in their lawsuit. Recalling the accident, Conroy wrote, &#8220;Waiting 3 minutes for the prep to dry would have all but eliminated the vapors from the alcohol in the solution and the area would not have been as flammable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to <em>The Oregonian<\/em>, OHSU and Dr. Adam Howard, the physician listed in the Murdoch family lawsuit, both declined to comment for privacy reasons. Multiple reports say Howard&#8217;s medical license in Oregon expired in January 2024. OHSU still lists Howard as an instructor, but he is also listed as an instructor at a West Virginia university where his license to practice medicine is up to date.
