Twelve years later, the story of what could only be referred to as a &#8220;charitable scandal&#8221; continues to raise eyebrows, especially now that Bondi has become Trump&#8217;s pick for the nation&#8217;s Attorney General ahead of his inauguration on Monday, Jan. 20.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-trump-s-magic-trick-turning-a-donation-into-a-mistake\">Trump&#8217;s magic trick: Turning a donation into a mistake<\/h2>\n<p>When the scandal happened, Bondi&#8217;s office was reportedly considering fraud charges against Trump University, the returning president\u2019s now-defunct real estate seminar business accused of ripping off students. Around the same time, the Trump Foundation \u2014 Trump\u2019s charitable organization \u2014 cut a $25,000 check to And Justice for All, a political group supporting Bondi\u2019s campaign, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonprofitpro.com\/article\/did-trump-foundation-make-illegal-donation-to-florida-attorney-general\/\" >NonProfit PRO<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A donation is supposed to be an act of kindness and generosity, but considering the timeline of Trump&#8217;s gesture, everything about it suggested an ulterior motive. Just three days before the check arrived, Bondi&#8217;s office had confirmed that it was reviewing allegations against Trump University. But critics were not buying it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears they gave an illegal political donation, told the IRS they didn\u2019t give a political donation, claimed it was made to a similarly named permissible group instead \u2014 and now they\u2019re saying it\u2019s an error?\u201d Jordan Libowitz, spokesperson for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-camp-issues-rare-admission-of-error-charity-donation-to-florida-ag-was-a-mistake\/2016\/03\/22\/349c8f8c-efb4-11e5-a61f-e9c95c06edca_story.html\" >The Washington Post<\/a><\/em> in 2016.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-quid-pro-quo-or-just-coincidence\">Quid pro quo or just coincidence?<\/h2>\n<p>Trump\u2019s donation not only violates federal laws prohibiting charities from making political contributions, but it also conveniently aligned with Bondi\u2019s decision not to pursue Trump University. While Bondi\u2019s spokesperson claimed the choice was made due to insufficient grounds, the timing remains suspicious to many.<\/p>\n<p>CREW quickly pounced on the issue, filing complaints with both the <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/fyi\/is-the-irs-actually-going-to-send-out-a-8700-stimulus-check\/\">IRS<\/a> and the Department of Justice. The watchdog group demanded investigations into whether Trump used his charity to sway Bondi\u2019s decision \u2014 an accusation Trump\u2019s camp has denied vehemently. Adding fuel to the fire, the Trump Foundation failed to disclose the donation on its 2013 tax return. Instead, it falsely listed the payment as a contribution to a Kansas-based anti-abortion nonprofit. The IRS later fined the foundation $2,500 for the improper donation, as per <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensforethics.org\/reports-investigations\/crew-investigations\/the-trump-foundation-pam-bondi-scandal\/\" >Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As for Bondi, who later endorsed Trump during his presidential campaign, she maintained that there was no wrongdoing. \u201cBased on the information at hand, we are comfortable with the propriety of the contribution from the Trump Foundation,\u201d Bondi\u2019s campaign treasurer, Nancy Watkins, said at the time. <\/p>\n<p>Still, Bondi\u2019s close relationship with Trump has continued to draw criticism. She served as a vocal defender during Trump\u2019s impeachment trial and was recently nominated as U.S. Attorney General. In 2018, the New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit accusing Trump of using the foundation\u2019s funds for personal and political gain. The case claimed Trump allegedly used charity funds to buy a $10,000 portrait of himself, settle legal disputes for his businesses, and even promote his 2016 presidential campaign, said <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-paid-2-million-in-damages-ordered-by-judge-over-misuse-of-charity-funds-new-york-attorney-general-said\/2019\/12\/10\/2132645e-1b7e-11ea-b4c1-fd0d91b60d9e_story.html\" >The Post<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In a major rebuke, a New York judge ordered Trump to pay $2 million in damages and distribute the foundation\u2019s remaining $1.8 million to legitimate charities. The Trump Foundation was also ultimately dissolved, with New York Attorney General Letitia James stating, \u201cMy office will continue to fight for accountability because no one is above the law \u2014 not a businessman, not a candidate for office, and not even the president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for the Bondi donation, Trump remained defiant. &#8220;Pam Bondi is a fabulous representative of the people\u2014Florida is lucky to have her. \u2026 The case in New York is pure politics brought by an incompetent attorney general, a political hack,&#8221; he told the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/politics\/elections\/trump-contribution-to-pam-bondis-re-election-draws-more-scrutiny-to-her\/2147796\/\" >Tampa Bay Times<\/a><\/em> a month after the donation. But the lingering questions surrounding his foundation&#8217;s supposed &#8220;mistake&#8221; and whether it influenced Bondi\u2019s actions have refused to go away since then.
