Our Score:\u00a0 3.5 out of 5<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n The ocean is a pretty scary place.\u00a0 Especially if you\u2019re a young girl just learning to swim.\u00a0 While treading water with her father, young Cassidy (Quinn P. Hensley) is getting mad, as her father keeps kicking her legs.\u00a0 Only dad is several yards away.\u00a0 Uh oh!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Well-acted, with some equally good effects, \u201cInto the Deep\u201d tells the story of the now grown up Cassidy (Taylor-Compton) and her boyfriend, Gregg (McGowan) as they prepare to dive to recover a rumored sunken treasure.\u00a0 Thanks to the constant guidance of her grandfather Shamus (Dreyfuss), Cassidy has conquered her fears to become a marine biologist.\u00a0 When the pair, and their friends, are taken captive by modern-day pirates searching for 80 kilos of heroin that has been lost at sea, it will take every bit of Cassidy\u2019s will to stay alive.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Of course, any shark-themed film will be compared with \u201cJaws,\u201d and \u201cInto the Deep\u201d is no exception.\u00a0 Even with Dreyfuss aboard, it\u2019s not \u201cJaws.\u201d\u00a0 But then again, it doesn\u2019t try to be.\u00a0 If I compare the film to a Peter Benchley story it would be \u201cThe Deep.\u201d\u00a0 The film\u2019s suspense comes from the interactions with the pirates.\u00a0 They are bold and ruthless and not above executing innocent boaters or the coastal authorities.\u00a0 The sharks ramp up the suspense even more, and the attacks are well staged.\u00a0 Nothing over the top.\u00a0 Very perfunctory and quick.\u00a0 In this day of CGI overuse, it is a credit to the filmmakers that they don\u2019t go overboard, so to speak.<\/p>\n The cast is strong, especially Taylor-Compton, who displays the silent toughness she will need to survive.\u00a0 Kudos also to Jon Seda, who plays the leader of the pirates.\u00a0 He takes a character that could be played over the top and keeps him grounded, making him even more menacing.\u00a0 And what a great bit of casting to have Mr. Dreyfuss in the cast.\u00a0 He has always had a way of holding the audience with just his words, and as we listen to his advice, shown through flashbacks, you hang on every word.\u00a0 \u201cRemember,\u201d he tells the young Cassidy, \u201cthis is their world.\u00a0 You are a visitor.\u00a0 You are a guest.\u201d\u00a0 The film is well-paced, and moves along swiftly.\u00a0 Production values are strong and the musical score, by Andy Fosbery, sets the tone well.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The final credits run alongside a very heartfelt PSA from Dreyfuss on the importance of sharks in our world and how to assist in shark conservation, something that was very important to \u201cJaws\u201d creator Peter Benchley.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n On a scale of
