Tesla is on the cusp of launching a range of \u201cmore affordable models\u201d in a bid to broaden its appeal after it logged its first annual decline in sales since becoming a mainstream brand.<\/p>\n

It sold 1.79 million cars last year, down from 1.81m in 2023.<\/p>\n

The new cars are intended to ultimately boost Tesla<\/a>‘s annual output by more than 60% compared with these figures, to around 3.0m cars.<\/p>\n

The company said the new cars will enter production in the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n

They\u00a0will use \u201caspects\u201d of both the existing Model 3<\/a> and Model Y<\/a> platforms as well as the new architecture that the firm\u00a0detailed last summer. They will also be built on the same factory\u00a0lines as Tesla\u2019s existing cars, which implies that they are an evolution of those vehicles, rather than all-new.<\/p>\n

The fact that Tesla has yet to reveal the new cars also suggests they are variants of the Model 3 and Model Y, given that the company has historically shown all-new vehicles years before they enter production. The Cybertruck<\/a>, for example, was unveiled in 2019 but deliveries only began in November 2023.<\/p>\n

The announcement brings clarity<\/a> after months of back-and-forth denials and confirmations by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

In April last year, Reuters reported that the long-mooted \u2018Model 2<\/a>\u2019 had been cancelled, to which Musk replied on social media that \u201cReuters is lying again\u201d.<\/p>\n

But in October, speaking at the reveal of the Cybercab<\/a> \u2013 a fully-autonomous two-seater \u2013\u00a0Musk said: \u201cWhen we talk about a $25,000 [\u00a320,000] electric car, it wouldn’t make much sense to think about a model other than the Cybercab.\u201d<\/p>\n

This implies that the new cars will not be pitched against the new breed of European superminis, such as the Renault 5<\/a> (priced from \u00a322,995) and\u00a0Citro\u00ebn \u00eb-C3<\/a> (from \u00a321,990).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s possible that they will instead be priced at around \u00a330,000 \u2013 substantially cheaper than the \u00a339,990 Model 3 \u2013 to fend off competition from Chinese firms such as Nio<\/a>\u2019s new Onvo<\/a> and Firefly<\/a> spin-offs, as well as BYD<\/a> and Xpeng<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
