Keep up with which stars are on the move, which ones a staying put and everything else in between.<\/p>\n<p id=\"HKZHjQ\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swishappeal.com\/\">WNBA<\/a>\u2019s free agency period is about to get frothy. <\/p>\n<p id=\"zuTqFp\">While most players and teams cannot officially agree to contracts until Feb. 1, the free agency waters have begun to churn, with the negotiation window opening on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Here\u2019s a look at what\u2019s happen so far, with updates to come as more signings, trades and credibly-sourced reports emerge:<\/p>\n<hr class=\"p-entry-hr\" id=\"KrISII\">\n<h2 id=\"oBPaGb\"><strong>A Katie Lou Storm\u2019s a brewin\u2019 <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"xd5cBU\">After agreeing to a contract buyout with the Indiana Fever earlier in the free agency period, Katie Lou Samuelson reached unrestricted free agency and will sign with the Seattle Storm on a one-year contract. <\/p>\n<p id=\"Xlpmgr\">It is a return to Seattle for Samuelson, who played for the Storm in 2021. <\/p>\n<div id=\"w3lkUK\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\" align=\"center\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Katie Lou Samuelson is headed back to the Seattle Storm, her agent told The Associated Press on Thursday. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5GasRhVJTJ\">https:\/\/t.co\/5GasRhVJTJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ESPN Women&#8217;s Hoops (@ESPN_WomenHoop) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESPN_WomenHoop\/status\/1892643837979591013?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 20, 2025<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"jARLdk\"><strong>More on the Mabrey-Sun standoff<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"muPtVr\">After Connecticut Sun president Jennifer Rizzotti\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/basketball\/2025\/connecticut-sun-president-not-hitting-the-panic-button-mabrey-1234828556\/\">interview with <em>Sportico<\/em>,<\/a> ESPN\u2019s Alexa Philippou followed up with the opposing sides in the developing dispute between the Sun and Marina Mabrey.<\/p>\n<div id=\"FrCp0q\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\" align=\"center\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The latest on the Connecticut Sun-Marina Mabrey situation:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YdDgSG8FgR\">https:\/\/t.co\/YdDgSG8FgR<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Alexa Philippou (@alexaphilippou) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alexaphilippou\/status\/1891993134579523700?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 18, 2025<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"DhCocB\">Mabrey\u2019s agent, Marcus Crenshaw of The FAM agency, criticized Connecticut for restricting Mabrey\u2019s empowerment as a modern player, writing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/43909517\/connecticut-sun-deny-marina-mabrey-trade-request\">a statement provided to ESPN<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"iTQKQ5\"><em>In this current age of women\u2019s empowerment and support of the players, the CT Sun threatening to force Marina Mabrey to play for them after her trade request is mind-boggling. Why would anyone try to force someone to play on their team when they don\u2019t want to be there? It\u2019s counterproductive in a ton of ways and everyone we have spoken to is perplexed about how they are handling Marina, after trading away Hall of Fame caliber players.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ao1GrY\">He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/43909517\/connecticut-sun-deny-marina-mabrey-trade-request\">added<\/a>, \u201cThe coach parted ways. No free agents returned and they are doing all they can to try and force Marina to stay when she clearly doesn\u2019t want to be there. It\u2019s interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"R37NSP\">After adopting a combative tone toward Mabrey in her interview with <em>Sportico<\/em>, Rizzotti offered a more magnanimous assessment of Mabrey and her status with the Sun when speaking to ESPN, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/43909517\/connecticut-sun-deny-marina-mabrey-trade-request\">sharing<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"UeqhmG\"><em>The reasons that we have for not trading Marina are rooted in positivity. It\u2019s rooted in a desire to build around her, have her here, have her be the catalyst for what we want to do offensively, taking advantage of her versatility, knowing that the style that [coach] Rashid [Meziane] plays with will suit her game, and knowing that we can put her in an individual situation to be really successful as this current CBA closes and a new one opens.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"8BJ4LJ\">Rizzotti exhibited further understanding of Mabrey\u2019s circumstance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/43909517\/connecticut-sun-deny-marina-mabrey-trade-request\">noting<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"b4d0M1\"><em>I think there\u2019s probably a lot of professional athletes that are on teams that they don\u2019t necessarily prefer to be on. I don\u2019t think that this would be an isolated situation&#8230;.I think Marina is as competitive as they come. It\u2019s one of the reasons that we wanted her here&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"OOYyuY\">Rizzotti then asserted the right of the Sun to do what is best for the organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/43909517\/connecticut-sun-deny-marina-mabrey-trade-request\">empahsizing that<\/a> \u201cit might also be seen as counterproductive for us to give in to every single trade request, right? So I think sometimes you get put in a no-win situation, and I think we\u2019re trying to be as fair as we can to a lot of different constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"9NyhYl\"><strong>Sun president defends organization, denies Mabrey\u2019s trade request<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"jZTJqT\">The hollowing out the Connecticut Sun roster has not hollowed out the spirit of team president Jennifer Rizzotti, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/basketball\/2025\/connecticut-sun-president-not-hitting-the-panic-button-mabrey-1234828556\/\">insisted in an interview<\/a> with <em>Sportico<\/em>, \u201cWe\u2019re not hitting the panic button. We feel good about the moves that we\u2019ve made. Thomas and Carrington, were traded to the Phoenix Mercury and Dallas Wings, respectively, while Bonner signed with the Indiana Fever and Jones joined the Atlanta Dream as unrestricted free agents. <\/p>\n<p id=\"EEs8Ex\">The most notable return from those transactions was Natasha Cloud, although the former Mercury guard has yet to be officially introduced by the organization. The team\u2019s best remaining player, 2024 midseason acquisition Marina Mabrey, also has requested a trade. Rizzotti offered a rather blistering response to Mabrey\u2019s reported request, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/basketball\/2025\/connecticut-sun-president-not-hitting-the-panic-button-mabrey-1234828556\/\">saying<\/a>, \u201cWe knew at the time that she had already forced her way out of two teams, so it was a bit risky for us to trade for her, but we felt like it was worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"qxdY5H\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\" align=\"center\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Marina Mabrey is the realest tbh <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IWt49uap46\">pic.twitter.com\/IWt49uap46<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 elle! (@wbb_wins) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wbb_wins\/status\/1891188656578187290?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2025<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"OMp7h9\">Rizzotti also criticized how other general managers, as well as player agents, have dealt with new Sun general manager Morgan Tuck, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/basketball\/2025\/connecticut-sun-president-not-hitting-the-panic-button-mabrey-1234828556\/\">asserting<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"5yEo7V\"><em>I\u2019m very disappointed in a lot of how agents and GMs have talked and threatened [Tuck] through this process She, through it all, has handled herself with integrity, fairness and steadiness that I\u2019m not sure that I would\u2019ve been able to have if I was dealing with some of these people.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"2mwQch\">Reading between the lines, it seems general managers and agents are expecting the unseasoned Tuck to relent to their demands, disregarding whether such transactions would benefit the Sun. Connecticut, however, is not complying. So, it looks like the WNBA\u2019s favorite chef will have to cook up something special to find her way to a different franchise.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"isdgY1\"><strong>Fever sign Turner<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"DZaXzg\">The Indiana Fever have continued their roster renovation, signing unrestricted free agent Brianna Turner. However, the player and team can negotiate a core contract with different terms. A cored player also can be traded, including to a team that has already cored a player. This, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RichardCohen1\/status\/1878939072959570273\">for example<\/a>, means the New York Liberty could acquire Satou Sabally. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fnuoH7\"><strong>Qualifying offer updates<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"zF32Nk\">The window for teams to issue qualifying offers to restricted free agents and reserved players closed on Monday, Jan. 20. <\/p>\n<p id=\"2Da4ky\">Restricted free agents who do not sign the qualifying offer presented by their team can sign an offer sheet from another team; however, that player\u2019s prior team has the right to match. Reserved players, in contrast, cannot negotiate a contract with other WNBA teams, although they can agree to contract terms different from the reserve qualifying offer with their current team.  If they accept the reserved player qualifying offer, which is a non-guaranteed training camp contract of $66,079, they can sign before the Feb. 1 signing window opens.
