A new concept car previewing the future of the Mazda MX-5<\/a> is set to be shown at the Tokyo motor show<\/a> later this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mazda<\/a> has confirmed that the theme of its stand in Tokyo will be \u201cthe future created by the love of cars”,\u00a0showcasing\u00a0its \u201ccontinued commitment to the creation of products that satisfy customers’ love of driving and cars\u201d.<\/p>\n

As testament to this ambition, the centrepiece of the Japanese manufacturer\u2019s exhibit will be \u201ca new concept car designed to symbolise the exhibit theme\u201d, which a preview image suggests will be a development of the sleek two-seat coup\u00e9 quietly unveiled in a financial presentation last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The rear light signature shown in the preview matches that of the coup\u00e9, with four roundels and an illuminated \u2018Mazda\u2019 wordmark. The shape of the rear diffuser is also similar, with fin-like extrusions where the arch meets the bumper.<\/p>\n

The coup\u00e9 shown in November 2022 was thought to give an early look at the next-generation sports car, given that it was shown alongside images celebrating each generation of the MX-5.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mazda will display the as-yet-unnamed concept on its Tokyo stand alongside several variants of the famed roadster and several other MX-5-themed attractions, further hinting at the relationship.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A company spokesperson previously told Autocar that the digital concept was a \u2018vision study\u2019 model, similar to the RX Vision concept<\/a> shown in 2015, intended to demonstrate the brand\u2019s commitment to enjoyable cars.<\/p>\n

Its chassis, briefly shown last November, features a large space for a longitudinally mounted engine and a structure \u2013 likely a fuel cell or battery enclosure \u2013 behind the driver. However, the concept\u2019s lack of exhausts \u2013 coupled with Mazda\u2019s major investment in future EVs \u2013 seems to confirm that it’s an EV.<\/p>\n

Mazda Europe\u2019s head of product development and engineering, Joachim Kunz, told Autocar last year that \u201chaving one generation [of MX-5] for 10 years is not a problem for us\u201d,\u00a0and given that the current car \u2013 launched in 2015 \u2013 has just been subtly updated for 2024, it isn’t expected to be replaced imminently.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s our brand icon and it’s always treated very specially,\u201d said Kunz. \u201cAt the moment, it looks like we will have this car forever, with this size and concept and combustion engine. Of course, some day, we will have to electrify it, but we want to keep this pure concept.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
