Ariel<\/a> and three partner firms\u00a0have secured funding worth around \u00a3300,000 to bring an\u00a0electric<\/a> Nomad off-roader<\/a> to production \u201cover the next few years\u201d.<\/p>\n

The backing comes through the Niche Vehicle Network, the body set up to assist the UK\u2019s many specialist manufacturers, which is itself backed by the semi-government Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), which directs grant\u00a0funding to deserving mobility projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ariel is understood already to have built a battery-powered prototype\u00a0and will use the money \u2013\u00a0which is conditional on it and its partners contributing another \u00a3300,000 of their own \u2013\u00a0to develop a production-ready specification for the vehicle, with all the powertrain and battery research this implies. It’s possible, for instance, that an electric Nomad could use a four-wheel drive system.<\/p>\n

The Somerset firm’s\u00a0partners in the project include\u00a0Rockfort, a battery research company with strong Formula E<\/a> connections, and BAMD, a biocomposite specialist whose expertise is in natural, recyclable composite materials.<\/p>\n

Ariel boss Simon Saunders wouldn’t\u00a0be drawn on a completion date for the project, especially since the firm is\u00a0understood to be within a few months of launching an all-new, petrol-engined Nomad 2.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmall-series manufacturers like us will get some kind of derogation of regulations that allows us to build our existing cars for longer,” Saunders said, “but I think we should be seeking zero emissions for moral reasons.<\/p>\n

“At Ariel, we\u2019re keen to do as much as possible to clean up the environment. It\u2019s as much our responsibility as any other car manufacturer’s.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saunders stressed\u00a0two other priorities. First, he said, any Ariel EV\u00a0must be \u201creliable and absolutely right\u201d. Second, it has to be a better performer than existing ICE Ariels.<\/p>\n

He cited\u00a0a previous electric Atom<\/a> project, in which Ariel was a partner years ago, that produced a vehicle \u201cnot quite as fast and three times as expensive\u201d as standard cars,\u00a0and\u00a0promised\u00a0that any electric Nomad would\u00a0be better than that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
