No details were provided, but according to a report by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/malaysia-thailand-proton-geely-ev-f85ffd53c3ebc402382bbb4a3747c2b1\" rel=\"noopener\" >Associated Press<\/a><\/em>, Thailand prime minister Srettha Thavisin said both countries would  discuss the matter soon.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/malaysia-thailand\/update-1-thai-pm-proton-geely-jv-eyes-electric-vehicle-factory-in-thailand-idUKL1N3BH0NG\" rel=\"noopener\" >Reuters<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/business\/motoring\/2662176\" rel=\"noopener\" >Bangkok Post<\/a><\/em> reported Srettha as saying the EV plant will be operated by a joint venture between the two carmakers. &#8220;They (Proton and Geely) look to set up an EV factory in Thailand, with a meeting to be held later and hopefully, a clear next step can be establish and move forward quickly,&#8221; Srettha said in a joint press conference during his official visit to Malaysia on Wednesday (October 11, 2023).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Proton and Chinese carmaker Geely are looking to set up an EV factory in Thailand. Geely will commit <a href=\"https:\/\/paultan.org\/2023\/10\/11\/geely-to-invest-rm32-billion-make-malaysia-export-hub-increase-local-rd-participation-anwar-ibrahim\/\">RM32 billion in investments<\/a> to make Malaysia its production hub for export markets, Anwar said on Tuesday (October 10, 2023).<\/p>\n<p>News of Proton and Geely\u2019s interest in setting up an EV plant in Thailand is surprising, as it is effectively the opposite of what was reported by local media back in August this year. At the time, it was said Geely supposedly <a href=\"https:\/\/paultan.org\/2023\/08\/07\/geely-supposedly-cancels-thailand-ev-production-plans-to-switch-its-focus-to-malaysia-report\/\">cancelled any plans<\/a> to set up <a href=\"https:\/\/paultan.org\/2023\/06\/02\/geely-is-planning-an-entry-into-thailand-ev-market\/\">EV production<\/a> in Thailand. <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Proton recently signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with smart Automobile to explore the possibility of <a href=\"https:\/\/paultan.org\/2023\/09\/19\/proton-and-smart-ink-agreement-to-explore-possibility-of-ckd-local-assembly-of-smart-vehicles-in-malaysia\/\">locally assembling smart vehicles in Tanjung Malim<\/a>.
