Personalised numberplates are hugely popular in the UK, but they’re also very divisive things.<\/p>\n

We look at one and are\u00a0either prompted with feelings of admiration at the name or message on the plate, or we dismiss them as being a vanity project\u00a0and\u00a0waste of money.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whatever the protruding\u00a0thoughts may be, the price that some of these things go for are undeniably impressive. Without further ado then, join us as we boggle at the top\u00a0most expensive numberplates ever sold in the UK.<\/p>\n

For reference, we\u2019ve even calculated what else you could buy with the money, in car terms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The most expensive numberplates sold in the UK:\u00a0<\/h3>\n

1 – 25 O – \u00a3518,480<\/strong><\/p>\n

The registration plate 25 O relates to the most expensive car ever sold at auction<\/a>: the Ferrari 250 GTO<\/a>. The plate\u2019s \u00a3518,480 price tag may be dwarfed by the car\u2019s \u00a330,750,300 final bid, but it\u2019s the most expensive plate sold in the UK yet. According to the DVLA, the plate now resides on an altogether more modern Ferrari – the LaFerrari<\/a>\u00a0hybrid hypercar.<\/p>\n

The price of the plate could get you ten Audi TT RS<\/a>s, but personalised plate vendor Regtransfers<\/a> reckons it\u2019s now increased in value, to \u00a3750,000 (fifteen TT RSs).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Plate1\"<\/p>\n

2 \u2013 X 1 – \u00a3502,500<\/strong><\/p>\n

Taking a close second place is the registration plate X 1. Little is known about the owner of the plate, but based on DVLA records it is currently in use on a Mercedes CLA<\/a> purchased within the last three years.\u00a0The plate\u00a0fetched its half-million pound price in November 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You could enjoy ten Mercedes-AMG CLA 45s for the amount originally paid\u00a0for the X 1 numberplate, and estimates suggest it has almost doubled its value since being purchased in 2012 to \u00a31,000,000. It’s unknown if the plate ever made its way onto a BMW X1<\/a> at any point.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"X<\/p>\n

3 \u2013 G 1 – \u00a3500,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

G 1 was the country\u2019s most expensive reg plate for little over a year before X 1 came along, pipping it by a mere \u00a32500. Nevertheless, G 1 sold in September 2011 for precisely half a million pounds; the equivalent of around 28 Ford Fiesta ST<\/a>s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If the seller sold the plate today, they would \u2013 according to estimates \u2013 double their money, to \u00a31 million. The DVLA database shows no record of the plate being in use at the time of writing.<\/p>\n

\"G<\/p>\n

4 – RR 1 – \u00a3472,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

A relatively new entry to this list, RR 1 was purchased in September 2018 for an amount that narrowly misses out on a podium position. Originally issued in 1925, the\u00a0last time this plate changed hands was back in the 1960s, where its then-new owner paid \u00a35000 for it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today the plate resides on a Rolls Royce Phantom<\/a>, and seems like a worthwhile investment: according to regtransfers, it has gone up in value and is currently worth more than \u00a3500,000.<\/p>\n

5 \u2013 F 1 – \u00a3440,625<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps the most evocative reg plate amongst this list, the F 1 plate sold in January 2008 for \u00a3440,625. It\u2019s currently registered to Afzal Kahn, of Kahn design fame,<\/a> on a Bugatti Veyron<\/a>. Before that, it was on a Volvo S80<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kahn has expressed that if offered, he would sell the numberplate for over \u00a310 million, but is not officially advertising the numberplate. The price Kahn payed for the plate in 2008 could buy you more than 15\u00a0examples of the BMW 3 Series<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Plate4<\/p>\n

6<\/strong> – SH 1 – \u00a3415,143<\/strong><\/p>\n

Little is known about this exuberantly priced cominbation of letters and numbers, but its currently fitted to a Bentley Continental GT<\/a>.\u00a0It was sold in April 2019 at a DVLA auction, and can be yours should you decide not to opt for two Maserati MC20<\/a>s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

7 \u2013 S 1 – \u00a3404,063<\/strong><\/p>\n

Arguably one of the most historic Scottish number plates ever printed, S 1 was issued in 1903 as the country’s\u00a0first registration plate. Lord Kingsburgh, one of the first people in Scotland to buy a car, became its owner, and it remained in the family for generations before finally changing hands.<\/p>\n

It was bought by an anonymous bidder in 2008, who said it would be used on an old Skoda<\/a>, although\u00a0the DVLA doesn’t show it as currently registered to any car. Either way, it was a shrewd investment – the plate is currently valued at more than \u00a31,000,000.<\/p>\n

\"S<\/p>\n

8 \u2013 1 D – \u00a3352,411<\/strong><\/p>\n

Next on the list is 1 D: first purchased in June 2009 for \u00a3352,411; in other words, roughly the same price as a Rolls-Royce Phantom Coup\u00e9<\/a>. It\u2019s currently registered to a Bentley Bentayga<\/a>; a car with a starting price of less than half that of the plate today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The plate was originally sold at a DVLA auction, but experts put its value today at \u00a3500,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"Plate6<\/p>\n

9 \u2013 1 S – \u00a3340,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

1 S was first bought in March 2010, and for a time resided on a car of\u00a0a similar value to its \u00a3340,000 original price tag: a Rolls-Royce Phantom<\/a>. The estimated worth of the plate has\u00a0almost doubled in value since, although according to the DVLA it isn’t currently registered on any vehicle.<\/p>\n

It costs the same as the Lexus LFA<\/a> when it was new, or 25 examples of the Citroen C3 You<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"Plate7<\/p>\n

11\u00a0\u2013 M 1 – \u00a3331,500<\/strong><\/p>\n

M 1 is another which found itself on a Bentley<\/a>; this time\u00a0on a Flying Spur<\/a>. The plate was bought in June 2006, making it one of the earliest entries on our list. It\u2019s for this reason that its value has increased so much; it\u2019s now valued at a cool \u00a31million.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Its original \u00a3331,500 price could buy three\u00a0Porsche 911 Carrera T\u00a0<\/a>coup\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

12\u00a0\u2013 GB 1- \u00a3325,000<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is one which has almost certainly risen in value post-Brexit<\/a>, and it\u2019s on a rather fitting car: the Rolls-Royce Phantom<\/a>. The patriotic numberplate was sold to a private buyer in November 2009 for \u00a3325,000, although it\u2019s now worth \u00a3500,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For that, you could buy a Lamborghini\u00a0Revuelto<\/a>, and still have over \u00a350,000 left.<\/p>\n
