He told reporters before the preseason began not to read into who Boston starts, even considering a surprise addition to the lineup for last Sunday\u2019s opener against Philadelphia. <\/p>\n<p id=\"cqwVFo\">Jrue Holiday ultimately came off the bench while Boston\u2019s regular starters reunited with Kristaps Porzingis replacing Robert Williams. The team\u2019s top six players sat out in New York, then Sam Hauser and Holiday started in place of resting Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.<\/p>\n<p id=\"kULmMV\">\u201cAt the end of the day, it doesn\u2019t really matter (who starts),\u201d Mazzulla said on Friday. \u201cWhat matters is we have to play hard and we have to execute &#8230; if we get so worked up about the first five minutes, what\u2019re we gonna do for the following 43?\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"gGeKFz\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wyZWaekBrIA?rel=0\" style=\"top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" scrolling=\"no\" allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"HSXX13\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.celticsblog.com\/\">Celtics<\/a> plan to mix-and-match starting lineups this season, with a focus on sustaining for the long haul and inevitable injuries leading to those changes anyway. Mazzulla told the team to remain flexible early in camp, especially with such important players potentially left out on any given night. Al Horford has only came off the bench 14 times in his NBA career. Derrick White thrived as a starter last season. Holiday \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ic1KPSFaYe\">who could come off the bench according to multiple reports<\/a> \u2014 arrived as the team\u2019s marquee offseason addition as a starting point guard on a championship team.<\/p>\n<p id=\"YDHZD9\">That dilemma speaks to the conversation of sacrifice, a major Celtics training camp theme. Kristaps Porzi\u0146\u0123is brought it up specifically after Saturday\u2019s practice. It became the lesson that resonated most with Tatum from his offseason workouts and conversations with Paul Pierce. <\/p>\n<p id=\"0DUL78\">A thinner, more star-studded team will have to find areas to give to win. Horford expressed a willingness, for the first time, to taking that back seat on Friday after sounding non-committal on Media Day.<\/p>\n<p id=\"M5grG8\">\u201cIt\u2019s a part of it,\u201d Horford said. \u201cWe\u2019re a very versatile group here, we have a lot of guys who can do different things. So that\u2019s something that I think is a strength of our group, and our guys, I can say that we\u2019re all pretty comfortable with that.\u201d <\/p>\n<div id=\"aQPa3M\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wt0QWN6Gq-4?rel=0\" style=\"top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" scrolling=\"no\" allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"zHy9NU\">Porzi\u0146\u0123is, unlikely to ever sit unless he\u2019s taking a night off, set a sacrificial tone by accepting a two-year extension for less than the max and giving up opportunities to star in Washington and Utah. He chose Boston, knowing he\u2019d have to fit in next to Jaylen Brown and Tatum and made the difficult decision to sit out from Latvia\u2019s run in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/fiba-world-cup\">FIBA World Cup<\/a> to begin training camp at full health. <\/p>\n<p id=\"MKlyTx\">Porzi\u0146\u0123is admitted he might\u2019ve powered through the plantar fasciitis if he found himself in a lower-stakes situation. He also reflected on the lack of self awareness when he entered the league, trying everything on the floor, acting ignorantly and not assessing areas of his game like posting-up that needed improvement. Entering last year, he took a look in the mirror and it produced his best season yet. <\/p>\n<p id=\"hnzQRD\">Saturday\u2019s practice reflected how far he came, spending roughly an hour after practice receiving treatment to stabilize his foot, hips and increasing his strength. Mazzulla and Horford praised his defensive efforts this week, while Porzi\u0146\u0123is began thinking about how the offensive dynamic will play out \u2014 confident that it\u2019ll occur easily. <\/p>\n<p id=\"nttAW1\">\u201cYou\u2019re just playing with these other talented players that you know can make stuff happen,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can just be there to support if needed. Honestly, I\u2019m just gonna play my game and everybody\u2019s gonna play their game and if all of our stats dip a little bit &#8230; who cares. We\u2019re here to win.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"SDZfJz\">Brown and Tatum set the tone in the offseason to instill a defensive emphasis for the team, which will inherently require them to expend more energy on that side of the ball than on offense. Their commitment to giving the ball up, moving and making teammates better could become the greatest swing factor in whether the team wins a championship, especially since they\u2019re the most pivotal figures and voices in the room with Marcus Smart gone. Their willingness to embrace vocal leadership \u2014 not natural for either \u2014 represents a different kind of sacrifice. <\/p>\n<div id=\"MRiOfQ\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J8sv2XymEgA?rel=0&amp;start=359\" style=\"top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; border: 0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" scrolling=\"no\" allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"q8nkIg\">Both players also expressed interest in deferring some of their ball time to Holiday. Brown noted his acclimation to an off-ball role as a form of sacrifice, while Tatum\u2019s passing improvement will represent his desire to play team basketball.<\/p>\n<p id=\"FEG0rj\">While not necessarily <em>the<\/em> flaw in last year\u2019s team, Grant Williams\u2019 demotion from the rotation, Smart\u2019s constant presence in crunch time and struggles Malcolm Brogdon faced transitioning to the sixth man role all could\u2019ve been addressed early so they didn\u2019t creep up as coaching difficulties later. <\/p>\n<p id=\"biOS64\">Whatever role those expectations for playing time contributed to last year\u2019s demise appear absent in camp this year. Everyone knows their role, or how it could change, with Brown and Tatum positioned to pull teammates in, make them feel empowered and willing to accept whatever adjustments Mazzulla decides. <\/p>\n<p id=\"i5BOow\">\u201cI know if you asked (Tatum),\u201d Mazzulla said. \u201cHe\u2019d much rather win a championship than win a MVP, and that\u2019s the process we\u2019re taking. What\u2019d you have to do to make the people around us better? &#8230; no one in this gym have we had to motivate yet. I think that\u2019s the sign of where we\u2019re trying to get to, Jayson, Jaylen, Al, Derrick, Kristaps.
