You can\u2019t say Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese has bad instincts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The \u201cTaxi Driver\u201d auteur knew on a gut level that David Grann\u2019s nonfiction book \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d could resonate with movie audiences. The shocking tale of greed, bigotry and corruption that left many members of Osage Nation dead in the early 20th century is both fascinating and infuriating.<\/p>\n

Add Scorsese\u2019s muses, past and present (Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro), and you\u2019ve got the definition of Oscar-bait cinema. Should \u201cKillers\u201d clean up during awards season it\u2019ll be due more to the director\u2019s loyal base than the film, a maddening affair with one clear takeaway.<\/p>\n

Noble intentions do not a good movie make.<\/p>\n

A clever prologue reveals how the Osage Nation became wealthy beyond measure in the 1920s when oil bubbled up on its land.<\/p>\n

Before you can say, \u201cTexas Tea,\u201d greedy white men swarm the community, eager to get their share of the riches.<\/p>\n

That includes DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, a simple soul trying to re-enter society after serving his country in World War I. He wouldn\u2019t mind some extra spending cash, thank you kindly, but he quickly falls for an Osage woman named Mollie (Lily Gladstone).<\/p>\n

Ernest\u2019s uncle, William King Hale (De Niro) nudges him in her direction. It\u2019s just what he does. He\u2019s connected to everyone and every player in the region, and his avuncular mien has the locals fooled.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s the rare \u201cgood\u201d white man, not one of many eager to exploit them.<\/p>\n

Ahem.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s no spoiler. It\u2019s clear from the beginning this King has ulterior motives. It\u2019s just as obvious that Ernest has a simple mind and a genuine love for Mollie. That doesn\u2019t square with what we see over what feels like a Harry Potter movie marathon.<\/p>\n

Really, Marty? Must \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d run for three hours and 26 minutes? You\u2019re a legend, full stop, but does the term \u201ckill your darlings\u201d mean anything to you?<\/p>\n

\u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d better justified its three-hour running time.<\/p>\n

\u201cKillers\u201d offers ripe supporting players, on paper, but few of them leave an emotional mark. The most disappointing example?<\/p>\n

The great Jesse Plemons arrives mid-movie as the Bureau of Investigations agent seeking the truth behind the unsolved Osage deaths. Finally.<\/p>\n
