It\u2019s the greatest novel ever written (ok, that\u2019s just my opinion but prove me wrong) that became a beloved film.\u00a0 Sixty-three years later, Harper Lee\u2019s \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d has been adapted into a play by Oscar and Emmy Award winning writer Aaron Sorkin.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n The play features Richard Thomas as Atticus Finch and Mary Badham, who played Scout in the film, earning an Academy Award nomination for her performance, as the Finch\u2019s cranky neighbor, Miss Dubose.\u00a0 In this production, the role of Scout is played by Maeve Moynihan.\u00a0 Ms. Moynihan recently took time while on the road to talk with Media Mikes about the show, her role and her journey to the stage.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MICHAEL SMITH:\u00a0 How did you come to be cast in \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MAEVE MOYNIHAN:\u00a0 Its been kind of a wild journey for me.\u00a0 I auditioned for the show in 2019 and went through a few rounds of auditions.\u00a0 And then they offered me the tour.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know there was a tour so I was thrilled.\u00a0 It was my first year in New York so it was really exciting.\u00a0 I was cast in the ensemble and I was supposed to understudy Scout and Mayella as well.\u00a0 Then COVID happened and I didn\u2019t have an industry.\u00a0 I waited two years to do the tour.\u00a0 It was surreal that it even happened because I kept thinking it would never happen.\u00a0 They would cancel it, then they kept changing the dates.\u00a0 They kept everything on pause.\u00a0 So, just to be in rehearsals in the room in New York was thrilling.\u00a0 I toured with the show for a year and a half and then they offered me Scout.\u00a0 It was super exciting.\u00a0 It still doesn\u2019t feel real.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 What drew you to acting?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MM:\u00a0 I grew up with three siblings and our parents gave us free reign to try multiple things out,\u00a0 Whether it was sports or the arts, they really wanted us to be exposed to things.\u00a0 When I was about eight I enrolled in a theater class and I loved it.\u00a0 That was at the Minneapolis Children\u2019s Theater Company.\u00a0 They were holding auditions for \u201cThe wizard of Oz\u201d for the Munchkins.\u00a0 My parents asked me if I wanted to audition and I told them \u201cno.\u00a0 But then I did it.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think much of it but they offered me a role as one of the Munchkins and that was my first play.\u00a0 Growing up I was so exposed to so many great theater companies, so in addition to being in some great productions I was also able to see a lot of them.\u00a0 That had a huge impact on me as a young adult.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Prior to being cast in the show had you read the novel or seen the film?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MM:\u00a0 I had read the novel, I think in ninth grade.\u00a0 I had never seen the film but once I got cast I watched it.\u00a0 Then I showed up at the table read, where we all sit down and read the script for the first time with each other and Mary Badham, who played Scout in the film and plays Miss Dubose in the play, was sitting across from me at the table.\u00a0 I looked over at her and I thought, \u201cOh my gosh\u2026that\u2019s scout!\u201d\u00a0 I literally had just realized it.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t put two and two together.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 I have not yet seen the show so the answer to this question may be revealed during the show.\u00a0 At the end of the novel, Scout is eight.\u00a0 You obviously are not.\u00a0 How is that addressed in the show?\u00a0 Or is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MM:\u00a0 In our production, what Aaron Sorkin has done, is create this theatrical device for the three kids:\u00a0 Scout, Jem and Dill.\u00a0 They are all played by adult actors playing children and they serve as the narrators of the story.\u00a0 They look on the audience as their confidant.\u00a0 What I think is particularly \u00a0interesting about Scout is that you get to see her as a young child and you get to see her as an adult lawyer reflecting on her life and reflecting on the choices her father made.\u00a0 I also think that with an adult actor you\u2019re able to create a deeper sense of vulnerability that maybe as a child actor you can\u2019t access.\u00a0 You can also delve into certain areas that may be hard to explain or hard for a young actor to grasp.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Any tips from Mary Badham?\u00a0 Any notes after a show?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MM:\u00a0 No, but she is really supportive and really encouraging.\u00a0 She\u2019s told me about her time with Gregory Peck and what it was like experiencing all that she did as a child.\u00a0 I can\u2019t even imagine being Oscar nominated at her age.\u00a0 And she has such a great humility about her.\u00a0 What I have really appreciated is that she has allowed me to make the role my own.\u00a0 Obviously she\u2019s there as a wonderful resource but she has also given me the time to figure it out myself.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MS:\u00a0 Do you have a dream role?\u00a0 Is there a role that, if they called you and sakd \u201cwould you like to play this?\u201d you\u2019d jump at it?<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n MM:\u00a0 Oh my gosh, that\u2019s such a hard question\u00a0 (laughs).\u00a0 Scout is pretty much a dream role, I must say.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty fantastic.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I kind of feel like I\u2019m already living out my dream now.\u00a0 The classics, I guess.\u00a0 Juliet.\u00a0 Any of the Tennesse Williams plays.\u00a0 Any of the really great writers.\u00a0 There are some great roles you\u2019d like to grow into, like Martha in \u201cWho\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the kind of role I someday hope to
