Back in 2021, it was announced that the classic 1972 blaxploitation horror film Blacula<\/em><\/strong><\/a> was getting a reboot from MGM with Deon Taylor<\/strong> (The Intruder<\/em>) set to direct. Well, the project is still moving forward, and while reporting on a 50th anniversary screening of the original classic taking place at the Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills on October 24, Variety <\/a>reports that the Blacula<\/em> reboot is \u201cslated for release next Halloween.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report also offered the following details on the project: \u201cThe new film is a modern reimagining of the 1972 movie, directed by William Crain<\/strong> and starring William Marshall<\/strong> as Blacula. The reboot picks up where the original saga left off, after the 1973 sequel Scream Blacula Scream, and will be set in a metropolitan city post-coronavirus pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the full synopsis for the movie: \u201cBlacula is an ancient African prince who is cursed by Dracula after he fails to agree to end the slave trade. Blacula is entombed and awakens 200 years later ready to avenge the death of his ancestors and of those responsible for robbing his people of their work, culture and heritage as they appropriated it for profit.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deon Taylor also co-wrote the script with Micah Ranum<\/strong>, and he said in a statement: \u201cBlacula is arguably one of the most prestigious Black franchises and so important to the culture as it birthed a groundswell of Blaxploitation-horror films, which changed the game for how our people were seen on the big screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to say: \u201cGrowing up in Gary, IN, I loved watching Blacula<\/em> and was so proud that Richard Brown was a fellow Gary native. It\u2019s mind-blowing that this franchise never got the energy or appreciation that other genre films received over the years, but this reboot is about to change all that. Thank you to Aaron, Brenda and team Bron as well as everyone at MGM for joining us on this adventure. We promise to bring new life to the iconic \u2018Blacula\u2019 character that will resonate with audiences worldwide!\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s an opportunity here to do some incredibly fun, and I\u2019m looking forward to seeing what the director ends up doing with this movie. <\/p>\n
