The only thing that hindered their excitement, albeit only slightly, was then learning that they would have to wait three years for the next film. However, it only ended up helping to grow the anticipation of it.<\/p>\n<p>(Now, for those who haven\u2019t watched <em>The Empire Strikes Back<\/em>, just a warning that I will be giving spoilers.)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JNwNXF9Y6kY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/celebrities\/george-lucas-unintentionally-video-bombed-random-documentary-creating-hilarious-viral-moment\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">George Lucas<\/a> made sure to keep one crucial moment out of the script; that of <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/an-iconic-star-wars-line-holds-much-more-resonance-than-simply-being-a-pop-culture-staple\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Darth Vader telling Luke Skywalker that he\u2019s his father<\/a>. The shooting script even intentionally included a red herring \u2014 in the printed version of the pivotal scene, Vader claims that Obi-Wan killed Luke\u2019s father. <em>Empire<\/em> director Irvin Kershner let Hamill \u2014 and only Hamill \u2014 in on the the truth, though he informed him only just prior to shooting the scene, so that Hamill\u2019s reaction was based on what<a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/george-lucass-original-outline-for-vader-reminds-us-star-wars-has-always-been-political\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> the evil Darth Vader<\/a> actually says. Hamill apparently also kept this a secret.<\/p>\n<p>Later, of course, Kershner also had to spill the beans to James Earl Jones, who voiced Darth Vader. Jones was surprised by the plot twist, and at the time even <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GQ1mmkKb_BQ?si=9ETfmqOmeEvuLtLx\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thought it was Vader lying to Luke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The script was kept very heavily guarded, but fans desperately wanted to know what was going to happen, and they weren\u2019t willing to wait until 1980.<\/p>\n<p>So, as a Star Wars fan, I decided to snoop around old newspaper articles to see whether I could find anything about script reveals before the release of <em>The Empire Strikes Back<\/em>. I came across an obscure interview with the cast, in which <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/can-you-believe-that-the-day-it-premiered-mark-hamill-claims-george-lucas-asked-him-to-record-dialogue-for-star-wars-on-release-day\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Hamill tells this other great story that I\u2019d never heard before<\/a> either.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mark Hamill &amp; Harrison Ford interviews: The Empire Strikes Back\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rOiNF8uB4Ho?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The article was published in October 1978, likely in numerous newspapers, though I found it in the October 28 edition of a Missouri newspaper called the <em>St. Joseph News-Press<\/em>. That means this is nearly a full two years before the release of the film, and even before the principal photography.<\/p>\n<p>In the interview, Hamill \u2014 who obviously plays Luke Skywalker \u2014 claims that he received a strange phone call one night from a man with a hushed voice, who offered him $6,500 for his script. Adjusted for inflation, that would be just over $30,000 today.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, it\u2019s significantly less than what Hamill was paid for on the first film, which is reportedly $650,000 plus a small percentage of the profits which, likely resulted in a not-so-small monetary windfall.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mark Hamill and the biggest secret of cinema history - The Graham Norton Show: 2017 - BBC One\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/krHwUKp0CWE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Hamill wasn\u2019t about to entertain the mysterious man\u2019s offer, but he decided to have at least a little bit of fun with him, and answered by telling the stranger that he couldn\u2019t sell the script, because he was a man of dignity and owed his allegiance to Lucas. Just before he hung up, however, he told the strange man that he wouldn\u2019t sell his script\u2026 for anything less than $100,000, that is. One can imagine Hamill saying such a thing then immediately hanging up, just to amuse himself. <\/p>\n<p>Although there was apparently never a follow-up phone call, there was one thing that later occurred to Hamill. He ultimately believed that the hushed voice on the other end of the phone very likely belonged to George Lucas himself.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t necessarily <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/celebrities\/the-prank-that-star-wars-crew-pulled-on-walter-cronkite-cbs-and-viewers\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">just a prank<\/a>. It may have been an actual loyalty test; Lucas wanted to see whether his actors could be enticed to sell the script. The big reveal would\u2019ve been that Obi-Wan had killed Vader, which isn\u2019t true. Thus, Lucas\u2019 being protective of the script would have, at least, saved the <em>wrong<\/em> reveal from ever getting out. Though the leaker, if pressed, could\u2019ve laid the misinformation blame on whoever had sold him the script.<\/p>\n<p>No other actors have ever discussed having such an experience, so it\u2019s unclear whether Hamill was the only one to receive a phone call. Lucas has never been asked about it, as far as I can tell, but perhaps if the story gains popularity, then Lucas will chime in.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, if Hamill receives another phone call with a hushed voice at the end of it, there\u2019s a possibility it would just be me, asking him if this story he told in 1978 is really true, and if it really <em>was<\/em> Lucas.
