{"id":42768,"date":"2023-11-11T19:30:43","date_gmt":"2023-11-11T19:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/?p=5970521"},"modified":"2023-11-11T16:36:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-11T16:36:00","slug":"no-6-uconn-men-cruise-past-stonehill-107-67-in-hartford-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gamefootballmobileanimeiphone.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/11\/no-6-uconn-men-cruise-past-stonehill-107-67-in-hartford-opener\/","title":{"rendered":"A Husky feast: Led by Newton, Clingan, all five starters hit double figures as UConn rolls past Stonehill, 107-67"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HARTFORD \u2013 The UConn men&#8217;s basketball team had all five starters in double-digits as it eased past Stonehill, 107-67, in the Hartford-opener on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Unveiling the national championship banner in the rafters of the XL Center prior to the game, the Huskies got going quickly and ran up the score early against the undersized Stonehill defense.<\/p>\n<p>Donovan Clingan, 7-foot-2 and six inches taller than the Skyhawks&#8217; tallest player, dominated the backboard early and was able to finish at the rim with ease. Meanwhile, Tristen Newton was burying 3-pointers \u2013 he made three of his first four and had nine points through the first four minutes of the game, combining with Clingan to score the Huskies&#8217; first 15.<\/p>\n<p>Newton finished with 22 points to lead all scorers in addition to his six rebounds, four assists and five steals while Clingan had 16 with seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal. On his 21st birthday, Alex Karaban had 15 points and seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Freshman Stephon Castle received an ovation as he went to the bench with 17 points (5 of 7) plus eight rebounds, five assists, a block and a pair of steals. And Cam Spencer, despite a slow shooting night (3 for 11 from the field, 2 for 10 from 3-point range), finished with 12 points, five rebounds, six assists and a block.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought we played segments there, obviously not a 40-minute game, but I thought you saw the potential at times where the defense was really good and the offense was really sharp,&#8221; head coach Dan Hurley said. &#8220;But like human nature, we started the game the way we did \u2013 which was as good as you could probably do it \u2013 and then human nature sets in and you let down your guard, same thing to start the second half. In a 10-second span, Johnson sprinted to one end of the court for a chase down block, then turned around and sprinted back the other way where he had a clear path to the rim. Hassan Diarra found him before any Skyhawks could get in the way and Johnson slammed it in with two hands for his sixth dunk of the season.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He just brings a different element (as a) movement center, running and rolling and eventually I think switching and hedging ball-screens hard, just give it a different look than Donovan gives us,&#8221; Hurley said. &#8220;Overall I don&#8217;t think it was a good performance, I thought that tandem could&#8217;ve been better. Samson, one defensive rebound, then Donovan, I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ve ever seen Donovan go 8 for 15. So we really gotta focus on our ability to dominate the paint with those two guys.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Johnson dunked twice more before finishing a driving layup on an inbounds play \u2013 his first field goal of the season that wasn&#8217;t a dunk \u2013 and finished with eight points, all in the first half. He and Clingan combined for eight rebounds and three blocks, down from the combined 13 rebounds and six blocks against Northern Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel like I wasn&#8217;t aggressive enough on the glass, seven rebounds against \u2013 those guys really weren&#8217;t that tall so I felt like I should&#8217;ve had more rebounds. I didn&#8217;t really protect the rim like I should and I wasn&#8217;t aggressive in the ball-screen game and I wasn&#8217;t rolling hard to the rim,&#8221; Clingan said. &#8220;It&#8217;s just things that I need to work on, I&#8217;ll watch some film and learn from it and move forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>UConn opened the second half on a 26-4 run that pushed the lead out to as many as 44 points with under 13 minutes to go. The Huskies controlled the backboard, out rebounding Stonehill 42-26, and had seven blocks to the Skyhawks&#8217; one. Stonehill finished the game 25 of 59 (42.4%) from the field and Benigni left with a career-high 22 points (9 of 14).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re trying to develop a mentality of quality, top quality and top execution, and full 40-minute game mentality. And these games are necessary, these games are important, we need to be able to play these young guys, these freshmen, get them minutes and let them build confidence before we start playing these monster games,&#8221; Hurley said. &#8220;So there&#8217;s a lot that goes into the final score.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Huskies (2-0) will look to extend the nonconference winning streak to 20 games
