Damningly, Snyder has described it as being <a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/its-referencing-the-things-that-star-wars-also-referenced-rebel-moon-wont-by-shy-in-wearing-the-inspirations-behind-its-inspirations-on-its-sleeve\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inspired by both <em>Star Wars<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>and the works of Akira Kurosawa, the guy who made <em>The Hidden Fortress\u2026 <\/em>which is to say, the inspiration behind <em>Star Wars.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>None of this is an accident. Snyder originally pitched\u00a0<em>Rebel Moon\u00a0<\/em>to Lucasfilm as a gritty, edgy, presumably very, very speed-ramp-heavy reimagining of the\u00a0<em>Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>universe. It would be his Snyder-y contribution to a galaxy far, far away: Grungy, mean, and Leonard Cohen plugged in somewhere if I were a betting man. Life being what it is, the whole thing fell apart when the company was purchased by Disney, a company with a history of poo-pooing sex, extreme violence, and profanity in their tentpole franchises. We\u2019re not worried about\u00a0<em>Deadpool 3<\/em>; you are.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fhr3MzT6exg?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;%23038;origin=https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>When the idea for an ultraviolent addition to their whooshy glowstick space wizard saga was scrapped at the House of Mouse, Snyder took\u00a0<em>Rebel Moon\u00a0<\/em>to other studios. Reskinning it with painted-over Rebel Alliance insignias, he pitched it as a movie and television series at Warner Bros. and tried to sell it as a triple-A video game in the vein of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/gaming\/how-popular-is-starfield\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Starfield<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0<em>Mass Effect<\/em>. Ultimately, Netflix picked up the ball, funding what they hope will be the next generation of classic spacefaring escapism. Expectations and the budget are high, with the streaming service dropping an estimated $160 million on Snyder\u2019s two-part epic. The project marks the latest addition to the uneasy partnership between Snyder and Netflix, with a proposed animated\u00a0<em>Army of the Dead\u00a0<\/em>prequel recently scrapped.<\/p>\n<p><em>Rebel Moon <\/em>is set in a used-future science fiction dystopia, where a former member of an oppressive fascist regime tries to atone for their past by joining a group of scrappy rebels. Spaceship fights featuring scrappy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/gaming\/star-wars-fans-are-freaking-out-over-han-solos-surprise-appearance-in-outlaws\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rogueish ne\u2019er-do-wells<\/a>\u00a0met in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/star-wars-trilogy-mos-eisley-cantina\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disreputable bars<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wegotthiscovered.com\/movies\/what-do-the-lightsaber-colors-in-star-wars-mean\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sci-fi sword fights<\/a>\u00a0ensue as the audience is introduced to colorful characters like tired robot knights, magical recluses with the power to commune with nature, and wow, they really, really didn\u2019t try to make this seem like
